I am having problems cleaning up my laptop. Looks like I have been infected with VirtuMonde or a trojan that has installed at least the sstqo.dll in the c:\windows\system32 subdirectory. I have tried BitDefender, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and McAfee VShield with no success. I tried deleting the sstqo.dll using the safe mode, but as you guessed the dll was in use. I have attached the files from HijackThis and BitDefender. Any help is appreciated.

    Happy New Year
    Bob

    TimW,

Thanks for the quick response. I ran Avenger and had the avenger.txt file, but after running the other scans in preperation to send this reply the file was deleted. I re-ran Avenger and have attached that file. The original file did indicate that the sstqo.dll was removed. I have also run CCleaner and all the other scans requested and have attached the results. AVG did not generate a log file. I am still seeing problems (BadURL.DOC file).

    Thanks Bob

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

    Reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Delete all that is in this folder:
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

    TimW,

    Thanks for the response.

    1. Uninstalled Java 2
    2. Installed Java 6
    3. Ran c:\MGtools\analyse.exe fixing the indicated issues
    4. Created and ran fixME.reg
    5. Downloaded a new copy of Avenger
    6. Ran Avanger with the "Input script manually"
    7. Received a error that the zip file could not be created (Avengererror.zip)
    8. The C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\akxequaf.sys was not deleted.
    8. Could not delete the subdirectory c:\windows\temp\tmp00002223 or the file tmp00000000. The file is being used by bdss.exe.
    9. Ran the c:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat.
    10. Attaching - Avenger.log and MGtools.zip

Things are getting better. I am no longer seeing pop-ups or random web sites, but I am still seeing the occasional bad URL warning. Why can I not get Avenger to run correctly? I also noticed that the attributes for the subdirectories Content.IE5, ., and .. under C:\Documents and Settings\Bob Ellington\Local Setting Temporary Internet Files keep getting changed. I removed the System and Hidden attributes last night, but they were back today (see Attributes.Doc for a screen shot).

Thanks for all your help. I know we are getting closer.

I don't know why avenger is not running for you ...you are unzipping it and turning off your anti-spyware and anti-virus programs?

Continue by downloading a tool we will need - Pocket KillBox

Save it to its own folder.

Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:

    * Delete on Reboot
    * then Click on the All Files button.*(or on the folders option)*
    * Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\foktmtyi.txt
    C:\bbqsapib.bat
    C:\WINDOWS\iitfonqh.txt
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hamnotry.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hvoxulym.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\jvdottko.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\C:\WINDOWS\system32\ljheoqhg.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mkjewtyx.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\onehnrpc.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pwillhto.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\akxequaf.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\wsyjyfnl.sys

    * Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    * Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.

If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Make sure this folder is empty:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Bob Ellington\Local Settings\Temp\

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from PocketKillBox.

    Tim,

    Thanks for the reply.

I downloaded and ran Pocket KillBox. Attached is the log. It did not delete C:\WINDOWS\iitfonqh.txt or C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\wsyjyfnl.sys. I did NOT receive the PendingFileRenameOperations prompt.

I downloaded and ran ATF-Cleaner. I am still running IE so you do not need to provide instructions for other browsers.

The C:\Documents and Settings\Bob Ellington\Local Settings\Temp\ was not empty and I could not delete the file jar_cache21230.tmp. The file is being used by javaw.exe.

Ran the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat. Attached is the zip file.

Since Pocket KillBox failed to delete C:\WINDOWS\iitfonqh.txt, I tried running Avenger to delete the file. It worked. Log is attached. Should I try using Avenger to delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\wsyjyfnl.sys and C:\Documents and Settings\Bob Ellington\Local Settings\Temp\jar_cache21230.tmp?

I did collect additional bad URLs, but am not attaching them since we just made changes.

Thanks again for all your work.

    Tim,

Thanks for getting back so quickly. Sorry for the delay in getting back with you I have been a little under the weather.

I ran Avenger with the script. Attached is the log file. Also attached is a new MGlogs.zip file. I am also attaching the S&D IE Helper malicious resource report. I'm not sure if this is helpful or not, but I keep getting these on sites like yours, MSN, Google, etc.

    Thanks again
    Bob

    Other than this:
    C:\Documents and Settings\nmangrxi.txt --->?
Your logs are clean. The S&D IE Helper malicious resource report is doing exactly what it is supposed to do...alert you to malicious activity, which you should deny!

You now have installed BitDefender Free Edition v10 while you also have McAfee VirusScan ---> two virus programs is a no no.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
    * How to Protect yourself from malware!

    Tim,

Thank you for all your help with my problem. I am just getting back from having been sick. I have followed all your instructions in your last post to delete all the tools we installed. I also deleted all the log file. I know that two virus programs is not a good idea, but I just installed BitDefender hoping it would help with the problem. I have deleted BitDefender. I have reset the restore point and reviewed "How to Protect yourself from malware!".

I cannot thank you enough for all the help you provided - you gave me back my computer without having to re-image it.

    Thank you!
    Bob
