ok, i went out and bought the Star Wars Best of PC which comes with 5 of the best star wars games for PC: battlefront, republic commando, galaxy at war (blatant lie, but the only one ;) ), jedi knight II: jedi outcast, and KOTOR.

all of the games will install on my laoptop: acer aspire 5515, 1.6Ghz proc, 3 gig RAMM, ati radeon x1200 graphics, win 7 pro. they'll all install, but KOTOR won't run :cry:cry i've gone through and changed every possible graphics setting, even tinkered with the ini file, you name it, i've probably tried it. it just won't work. when i start the game the only part of the character models that will be in the proper place is the eyes and mouth, the rest of the body/clothing will be floating around aimlessly close by like a balloon tied to a kid's wrist.

the only updates available for the game are already in this release and even swapping to some legacy drivers (which almost broke win7) didnt work. nothing on the web site for LucasArts or Microsoft.

anybody, anything, PLEASE HALP!!!! (sorry, couldn't help it thats just damned hilarious, the 'halp'-age :-D )

Have you tried running it in compatability mode?

I must admit I've never seen a game do what you are saying but it sounds more like an issues with the way the game is running, so first thought is compatability.

i agree and yeah tried it. matter of fact, i went so far as to manipulate stuff and try it in comp. mode for every OS that KOTOR has been known to run on. all to no avail.

    Wow, thats pretty strange.

You probably have but an clean reinstall of the game? meaning completely removing the game and then reinstalling it.

I presume you are experiencing no issues with any other games?

Other than that I can only suggest taking it back and trying a different disc, not entirly convinced that will work though.

It would be handy if someone could confirm it's compatability with Win7, there are a few games that simply wont run properly on Win7 no matter what you do.

    Sorry couldn't be more helpful.

I'm running Win7 Pro 32bit w/ DirectX 11, and KotOR doesn't have any issues on my system.

It sounds like a driver issue, but you said you have installed legacy drivers so I'm guessing you have already made sure you're using current drivers and trying it with those... only other thing that comes to mind is a glitch in installation that affected textures or the like. Your system specs certainly should not be an issue. I can't really offer anything more than Nedlamar has already pointed out aside from those thoughts. I'll think on it tho...

Nedlamar: yeah did the fresh install- even revo-ed it to uninstall which ate the other games that came in the 5 pack.

no, every other game in the pack, except the free trial of galaxy which i didnt care about anyway and dont meet the specs for, runs fine. cant take it back, ordered it off amazon many moons ago.

ScoobySnack: yeah latest drivers. the legacy ones ate win7, had to system restore after i found out it still wouldn't work.

the only i can think of is that this OS isn't native to my laptop, it was an install. if that's the problem, then there is no fix. (got my win7 through Microsoft's action pack deal at work, pre-release)

almost anything ya can think of as far as normal stuff i've tried. thats why i posted here. i found one obscure reference to the same style glitch, but he fixed it with the upgrade that is already in this distro. i even tried installing without the patch, then applying and no difference.

im at a complete loss. if i could get a screen-shot i'd post it, but lucasarts is notoriously ornery about letting ya do that on their games lol

    Fraps.

When you installed the game, did it offer to install DirectX9, and did you decline? If you did, wipe all traces of your KotOR installation, reinstall, and this time install DirectX9 from the CD. That made Jade Empire work.

If that fails, have you tried this fix?

yeah tried that too, thanks though!! got work out all the old fixes :-D

edit: just saw the linked text, but yeah tried that too. that fix is mostly for crashes, which oddly i don't have much trouble with. thanks again though, damn good idea

ATI cards were never good with Bioware games. Never. You may need the driver from when the game came out... that would suck.

Just out of curiosity, have you/can you try it on a different PC?

This could verify whether it's your system or the game.

After scouting around the intertubes a bit it looks like ATI and KotOR have had a long and troubled history. The problem seems to be in OpenGL support with the ATI drivers, which is something I have gathered is and has been a running problem for ATI, KotOR notwithstanding. It looks like it is something that has been addressed for the most part (but apparently still an issue) by staying current with the Catalyst drivers.

Since Acer doesn't have current drivers to support Win7 for your laptop, I'd say that's most likely your problem. If you have plenty of room on your hdd and a spare copy of XP (or worst case Vista) lying around, then you might try a dual installation, and run KotOR from XP/Vista.

One other thought, probably a shot in the dark, is that if you are running a dual core cpu, you might try setting the processor affinity to 1 core. I've had graphics problems in the past solved by this, though I haven't the slightest idea how it works technically. (start KotOR, select it by right clicking it from the processes tab in task manager(the actual game exe, not the launcher.exe), click set affinity, uncheck all but the lowest numbered cpu box).

My only other thought, and least helpful in your current position, is to buy Nvidia :-D /ducks fire from the ATI camp

There's a sticky in Bioware's KotOR forum community about which installation files to modify if you have ATI drivers. It might be worth checking out.

Nedlamar: yep on a win 7 machine and it ran fine first try

ScoobySnack: single core 1.6ghz processor, and yeah i found all that stuff. gets to be a headache inducing read doesn't it? lol

acer w/no 7 drivers: yeah. harddisk space aplenty, but it just seems silly to install XP (i'll never work with vista again if i can help it) just to play 1 game :(

Mimsy: dont remember if i found that or not, i'll check up on it and post afterwords. and i gotta question for ya Mims: why you always following me? :neener

If it comes down to that as a last resort, do it!; you will be glad you did ... and yes Vista is :crap

It's this one. I haven't read through all of it since I've never played KotOR on a system with an ATI card, but people in that forum reference it all the time.

And don't flatter yourself, I'm not following you. I'm waiting for the right moment to steal back the Ebon Hawk. :guns :p
