Thanks for getting back so soon! I ran the combofix,Spybot,AVG Anti-Spyware and MG Tools. I could not get a report from the AVG Spyware! I ran it 3 times ( about 65 minutes per time and it did not give a report). I followed the directions to a tee making sure to select "automatically generate report after every scan" and un-selecting "only if threats were found".
This stardoor causes pop ups to come up every 3 to 5 minutes and it also rloads itself into my allowed sites under the pop up blockers. it has been doing this for 4 days and I think I was running AOL when I got it.
    Hope you can help.

What you have is the most recent form of a Vundo infection. First you must put your system in normal startup mode as requested in the first part of the READ & RUN ME instructions. You are using MSconfig to control startups and you must not do this. Correct this now.

Okay now we need to use a new tool.
    • Download and save to RenV.exe from following link to Desktop (must be on the Desktop)
    • Now Copy the bold text in the below code box to notepad. Save it as Log.txt to your desktop. (It must be on your Desktop).
    Code:
    ----a-w 344,064 2008-01-02 15:12:40 C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx .exe
    ----a-w 180,269 2008-01-01 16:07:28 C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched .exe
    ----a-w 52,896 2008-01-02 15:12:59 C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp .exe
    ----a-w 229,438 2008-01-02 15:12:44 C:\Program Files\HPQ\Default Settings\cpqset .exe
    ----a-w 132,496 2008-01-02 13:36:12 C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched .exe
    ----a-w 61,440 2008-01-02 15:13:17 C:\Program Files\kernel\kernel .exe
    ----a-w 1,200,128 2008-01-02 18:57:32 C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\wcescomm .exe
    ----a-w 98,304 2008-01-01 16:07:25 C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask .exe
    ----a-w 419,280 2008-01-02 15:13:09 C:\Program Files\SpywareDetector\LiveUpdateSD .exe
    ----a-w 706,000 2008-01-02 15:13:09 C:\Program Files\SpywareDetector\SDSystemTray .exe
    ----a-w 125,168 2008-01-02 15:13:02 C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\VPTray .exe
    ----a-w 684,123 2008-01-02 15:12:56 C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh .exe
    ----a-w 98,395 2008-01-02 15:12:51 C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPLpr .exe
    ----a-w 94,208 2008-01-02 15:12:46 C:\WINDOWS\SM1BG .EXE
    ----a-w 15,360 2008-01-02 13:36:16 C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon .exe
    • Now using your mouse, drag Log.txt onto RenV.exe
    • When finished, RenV.exe will produce a new log names Log.txt on your Desktop thus overwriting the one you made. Attach the new Log.txt to your next reply.
Now uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only) <--- should have been uninstalled in the 1st step in the READ ME

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [kernel] C:\Program Files\kernel\kernel.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by double clicking on it.

    Attach the below new logs:
    • Log.txt
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

The infection you had from Vundo may have corrupted your Symantec Antivirus and it could be necessary to uninstall it, reboot, and then reinstall. I would wait until we have finished with our clean though.

First you need to put your system into Normal Startup mode as was requested in the very beginning of the READ & RUN ME. You must not use MSconfig to control startups like you are doing. We have more to do but cannot continue until you do this. And you need to remain in normal startup mode.

After doing this, you have to do the below again.

Run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by double clicking on it.

    Attach the below new logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

It is now in Normal Startup Mode.
    Thanks again

Did you purchase Max Registry Cleaner and Spyware Detector?? If not, uninstall them now. Well uninstall Max Registry Cleaner that is since they did not put an uninstall in for Spyware Detector. We will remove the second one manually.

What is the below file? If unknown, delete it?
    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\tomp\My Documents\"
    sp33644.exe Dec 17 2007 27443648 "sp33644.exe"
Now we need to remove a stuck service from SpywareDetector.

    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to SDService
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemTraySD] C:\Program Files\SpywareDetector\SDSystemTray.exe -AUTO
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SDAutoLiveupdate] C:\Program Files\SpywareDetector\LiveUpdateSD.exe -AUTO
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask .exe" -atboottime

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Noq run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
After reboot look for all of the above files we had Avenger attempt to delete. If you still see them, delete them yourself.

    Now run Ccleaner!

    • Now download the newest version of MGtools.exe and save it to C:\MGtools.exe as requested in the READ ME.
    • Now double click C:\MGtools.exe to install the new version and generate a new log.
    • Now attach the below new logs:
      • C:\avenger.txt
      • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Here they are. I deleted the Max Registry Cleaner as well.
The only file that still remains is C:/WINDOWS/Temp/hlktmp-it says it was being used at the time and i could not delete it manually.
the computer is running great and there is no more starsdoor pop ups! my computer keeps telling me that my Symantic aoto protect in not enabled.
also can you tell me how to get AOL from starting at startup??

Your logs are clean but I would like to see if we can find out what it locking/using the C:/WINDOWS/Temp/hlktmp file. It may be a valid application but it would be nice to know for sure. Please download and install this: Unlocker

Then from Windows Explorer locate the C:/WINDOWS/Temp/hlktmp file and right click on it. Select the Unlocker item from the menu. See if it can tell you what application is locking/using the file.

  13. IZZOT

    IZZOT Private E-2

I tried again to delete it and it would not let me. this is what the unlocker read:
    Process- System
    Path Locked- C:/WINDOWS/Temp/hlktmp
    PID-4
    Handle-5120
    Process Path-System
    i hope this helps.
Also-do you have time to help me get AOL from starting everytime i restart my computer?

  14. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

I don't want you to try an delete it it anymore. We are just trying to see who has it locked. That is not enough info to know exactly what is using it but it does say System which would appear to be that it may be part of Windows.

I'm not sure what you mean.

Are you saying you do not want it to load at startup?
    Do you use AOL?
Do you need it in order to connect to the internet?

  15. IZZOT

    IZZOT Private E-2

i only use AOL as a secondary email address that i have been using for about 6 years, but i use internet explorer 99% of the time. i want to keep AOL from loading at startup but not delete it completely from my computer.
    can u help?

  16. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Well you have 3 items from AOL that are loading at startup. They are seen in your HJT log in the below lines:
The first two can just be fixed using HijackThis and probably will not affect your ability to use AOL especially if not using a dialup connection which is what the seond one is for.

The third one is a service and you cannot just fix it with HijackThis. I have no idea why it is there. But then again, the other items didn't need to be there either. If we removed it, it may just reload after you startup AOL again.

So I would say only do the below.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HostManager] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\1118538701\ee\AOLSoftware.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AOLDialer] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\AOLDial.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    10. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    11. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    12. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
