Start menu & Desktop shortcuts don't work

    I have an HP laptop running Windows XP Home Edition. All shortcuts/icons have become invalid. Ran the usual utilities ie antivirus etc to no avail. If i install something, icon becomes invalid. Can't run any programs. How do I repair? Have important files I need to access for work.

    HI!
    Not sure this will work, but if it's only the shortcuts that are messed up you may be able to delete the 'bad' one then go to the program on your programs menu or the program's 'program' folder, right click the .exe for it and 'send to...desktop' to create a new working shortcut.
