READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

• If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.

• Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

Notes:

1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
   
   • Starting your computer in Safe mode
2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

 

Did you run the MGtools.exe file as requested? If so, the log is exactly where stated which is C:\MGlogs.zip file and that is all you need to enter into the Manage Attachments form to upload it.

We need this file to continue.

 

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java(TM) 6 Update 4

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\System32\tmp_55.dll
O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - file:///C:/DOCUME~1/user/LOCALS~1/Temp/msoclip1/01/clip_image002.jpg

NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

After clicking Fix, exit HJT.


Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

• Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
  • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
• Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:

• Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
• At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
• You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
• Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
• Follow the prompts.
• When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
• I will ask for this log below

Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.


Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).


Then attach the below logs:

• C:\ComboFix.txt
• C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

 

I need the requested new log from ComboFix.

 

In the future, please complete instructions in the order given.

If it is telling you that you already attached the log, it means you are trying to attach the same log as last time. And based on what I see in your MGlogs.zip file, you still have the old log and you are still infected. This would mean you either did not run the procedure with ComboFix or you had some kind of problem getting it to run properly. Did you have a problem?

 

We are going to have to uninstall ComboFix and then redownload it and then run the fix


Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required

"%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u


Notes:

• The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
• This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
• Also check for a C:\combofix a C:\QooBox folder, and the C:\ComboFix.txt file and delete these if they still exist.

Now download combofix.exeto your Desktop

Now redo my fix from the ComboFix part of the procedure thru to the end but before trying to drag the CFScript.txt file on top of ComboFix.exe, make sure you try to shutdown all protection software and you close all browser windows.

 

Okay let's use a different tool.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.

• Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
• Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
• Do not change any check box options!!
• Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

• Now click the Execute button.
• Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
• Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
• Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
• A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run Ccleaner!

Now download and run the current version of MGtools.exe

Then attach the below logs:

• C:\avenger.txt
• C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

 

That was my fault. I forgot to move some of those fixes into a manual registry patch. Avenger can fix things in the HKCU registry hive.

You waited too long to finish the fix and the version that link referred to had already expired. However, the current version is always available from the link in the READ & RUN ME. Please download and run it now from the READ & RUN ME and attach a new log.

You did not tell me how things are working.
