Starting Over

I'm having lots of problems with my PC. It keeps freezing when I'm online.Various error messages appear and it basically does what it wants. I keep having to pres the reset button. I'm not very PC literate but I've had an idea.
If I format my Pc and re-install Windows Me would it help?
If yes then how do I do it? A friend showed me how to a few years ago but we've lost contact and I can't remember how to do it.

Have you done a virus scan

 

Thats half the problem. I got a bad virus (Addestroyer) so I then installed Norton. Using Norton and Ad-aware I managed to fix the problem. Saying that, Norton sometimes finds files it can't delete. The latest problem I have is that when I start PC a message comes up saying:
NAV AUTOPROTECT Unable to initialize the virus scanning engine database files.
I've uninstalled Norton and reinstalled it but each time I turn PC on the same mesage appears. When I try to run Norton a mesage comes up saying that I need to restart Pc for changes to take effect. I do this but nothing happens. I'm back to square one.

Hi, will try out what you suggested. Won't be able to do it for a couple of days (busy) but soon as I've given it a go I'll let you know the outcome.

Have done what you suggested. PC now working pretty OK. Only problem now is Norton 2004 wont start so I have got in touch with them to get it solved.
