Sorry, I have been rather tied up, but I see Eldon has been helping- I had to red right through again to see what we might be missing.
    Question
Are you putting the cdd/dvd in before starting up ?....important- if not it will not boot from the dvd....
If you are trying to install from within Windows 7- it will not work- looks to me like that is what you are trying.....
If you put the cd/dvd in and then start up, you need to go into bios and choose to boot from cd/dvd for it to work.
Might I suggest , if you are not already doing it, that you have that post up on your desktop so that you can read it, whilst trying it.

Just one thing I would ask, - If you look at 'computer', can you upload a picture of all partitions (Maximum on MBR systems is 4)
We only count 3, and the new 10gb would make 4---(100mb,++ C:, Recovery, and PLUS the new XP partition created)...Is that correct.
I will be back tomorrow, unless Eldon is available , before then. (Gotta go now, I am afraid)

You were right, I was trying to set up in Win7.
I booted up in bios and now at the point to chose from a list.

    Partition 1 (fat)
    Partition 2 recovery
    Unpartitioned space
    Partition 3 OS (NIFS)
    Partition 4 Windows XP (NIFS)

I don't want to make a mistake and chose the wrong partition.

I took a chance and chose Partition 4. It must have been the right partition, WinXP was installed and running. When I boot up it boots up with WinXP. Now I need to know how I can boot up with both WinXP and Win7?

Thank you for the two links. Unfortunately the new XP partition is unable to go online to download the files.

I tried to set up the Internet connection by going to the control panel and clicked (set up or change your internet connection) on the connection tab I clicked (LAN setting) I first tried the automatic detect setting but that didn't work. I connected the cable from the router and typed the ESSID into the address, but that didn't work.

The first time I attempted to connect to the ESSID they gave me directions on how to get the ESSID from my router on to a USB. That also failed. I checked the USB and the files I created are no longer there.

If I can't get online can I download them on another computers and USB and install it to the new partition this way?

    I'm on my Win10 laptop

Download the file on your Win10 laptop and transfer it to the other laptop using a flash drive.

  10. Hair of red

I did that but I still need to get on line to continue the EazyBCD installation.

Please follow Eldon on this, so as not to get confused....
I just want to ask if you have tried opening your browser and type 192.168.1. and the router log on page should pop up. You may then be able to connect through the Ethernet cable
Also, if you are on the same laptop that had W7 on it, you may be able to look into W7 from the back door (I know it works for later operating systems, but have not got that spare partition on another hard drive to try XP on like we have here) Try clicking on my computer, to see the XP partition, ad it may show the C; partition, etc: --- If it does, then anything you downloaded on that w7 partition may be possible to copy and paste into the XP --
The reason I am suggesting this, is that you should have drivers, and other updates there ,that you previously downloaded, and have access to them.

I just installed EasyBCD in Windows XP without an internet connection.

    Baklogic,
I typed the number in the browser but that site was not found.

This is the files from Win7 C: drive. Do you see any files that might help me set up Internet connection? win 7.png

    Eldon,

My mistake. It was the Net 2.0 SP2 framework that stopped the installation. I can't get it from the internet. I hope I can find it onboard.

It should be part of Windows 7

The astebner refers to Aaron Stebner. He is the authority on all things Net framework related.

Thank you Eldon. The Net.framework was installed and EasyBCD was fully installed. I'm too tired now to continue. I'll get back to it tomorrow.

I started EasyBCD and got to this page. View attachment 233760 I don't know if you are able to enlarge it. Anyway I added it and got to the page where I was able to add the "Windows NT/2K/XP/2000" file. View attachment 233761 I exited from the File drop down list from the top of the page,.

I then re-booted and got this message:
"WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FILE (WINDOWS ROOT) SYSTEM32\NTOZKANL.EXE IS MISSING.
RE-INSTALL A COPY OF THE ABOVE FILE.)

I must have done something wrong although I don't know what. The only thing I did on my own was to exit in the file drop down list.

Your attachments are not showing. Use Upload a File at the bottom right of your post.

There is no NTOZKANL.EXE file in Windows XP. Do you perhaps mean ntoskrnl.exe?

I'm Sorry about the mixup of the files. I can no longer get those files.

You are right about my wrongly typed <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe file.

That is the file that I have to re-install that is missing to be able to boot up. When I try to boot up I'm able to go to boot options it then goes to the erra message.

Can you not boot into WinXP or Win7?

I was working in Win XP when the reboot error message appeared.

    What is the current situation?
    Can you use the computer?

I was running EasyBCD and got to the second page where I then added WindowsNT/2K/XP/2000. I left the (automatically detect correct drive) checked. I should have re-booted at that time but made the mistake of exiting instead. That is why it won't boot up and gets the error message. Windows could not start because the file (Windows root) System 32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt.

I was able to re-install Win XP alright but when I booted up I got the same error message why it couldn't boot up. The same file is still missing. I tried booting up twice to make sure the file was missing. It was.

Hi, I have been on a short holiday- Still suffering, I see.
    Question
If this is the desktop, what make and model is it, and was it w7 originally (you quoted w8 earlier)- If the laptop (w10 ) make and model, please.
It has a recovery partition, if you get really stuck, but wait for that , until we see what else we can do to get you back and working.

O.K- So if all else gives too much problem- we know what system we are involved with.
Have you got a W7 disk (NOT the Dell disc recovery disc ,as that will not work properly in repair)
If you have then you can try the following....
Start PC, Insert Windows 7 DVD and hit a key when asked to--change your boot order to boot from DVD!
    Click on "Repair your computer":
The installer will scan your PC for previous Windows installations:
    Click on Command Prompt
Enter the following command, at the flashing cursor
    bootsect /nt60 ALL
When it completes and the cursor is flshing again, type EXIT and click enter, and reboot, but do not press to stsrt from dvd, as we do not want to this time.
My memory is not brilliant on this, but I thought we might try this first ,before trying the other commands, and I have been ordered to take the missus out , so I will try to come back later, unless Eldon is about.
    There a
are other command to repair mbr, and boot, but try that other one first.
If it boots successfully, -good- if not we may have to try fiing mbr and boot, but the way I m trying is to rectify both boot to W7 and Xp- if successful-job ill be done.

I hope you and your missus had a good outing (Dinner?)

Everything worked like a charm. I booted up in Win 7 and installed EasyBCD. I took the spare time to copy all my files to CD's

I don't want to make the same mistake with EasyBCD. I'll wait until I get further instructions from you.

    Well done !
Now before doing anything else- Forget EasyBcd for now.
When you restart, does it give you a choice- W7or XP ? - If my memory is correct, it should.
If it does , try choosing XP!- If it also works, then you do not need EasyBCD.
If all is O.K , then
As I suggested before looking at the W7 (computer- C; partition- Documents/ downloads /or, Desktop of C:)
Look for the documents, or, downloads, or desktop folders, and look for the files you downloaded- I did suggest you put them in a folder so that you could find them easily......

  32. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

You could also copy the files you downloaded for XP in Windows 7, and then go to computer to show the drives/partitions, and choose the XP partition and paste them into either document folder, or, even desktop of the XP partition- this could include the service packs, and drivers and antivirus, and the brouser I suggested previously.
This can all be done ,even if the XP will still not boot up, ready for when it can.
By the way The missus had her birthday on Thursday, and we had a few days away for her, and had to see the daughter last night.....

Wish your missus a happy birthday for me. I hope she and yourself have many more happy days.
I'm glad that I waited for your return. Everything worked out fine with your great advice. I didn't have to use EasyBCD. On boot up it has both choices, Win7 & WinXP. I already started to copy all my game files. I'll have to check and copy the rest of the files you advised to get.

I am pleased you managed to get that running- I look forward to you getting XP working for your old games.
The wife appreciates your birthday wishes- that helps when I spend too much time tinkering, and
    occasionally
    trying to help on Majorgeeks.
But, it takes more than one to solve some problems- Eldon, Digerati, and Plodr put in a lot of work, and sometimes one comment will change the overall outcome.

Please accept my apologies to all MajorGeeks who helped me get my WinXP and Dosbox up and running. You guys and girls really know your stuff. Not only are you effecent in computers, you don't know when to quit. I wanted to quit several times but you said No.
If it wasn't for your persistence, I wouldn't have my XP and Dosbox working now. So thank
All of you for a job well done.

Thanks Baklogic. I finally have sound. I had to copy the file and pasted it in a new folder in my documents so it would be seen easier.

    Another job well done, Thanks!:)
