Startup issue

Ok so I did run a search in this forums but couldn't really find any answers so thought I'd post something new.

I discovered this when trying to install the Outpost personal firewall (downloaded from here actually). When I tried to restart to finalise the install of it, my computer froze before reaching the login screen. This same thing happened when also taking other programs off (sunbelt personal firewall). I had to actually restore to before installing Outpost because I could only boot in safe mode.

So this made me think to disable unnecessary startup items and go from there to figure out the problem. This is when I discovered that I've had my machine set to selective startup for... I don't know how long. This must have been a long time ago when trying to fix another problem. Anyway, there were a few items which were unchecked, which are ok to keep that way for a short time I guess, but since I stupidly forgot and left it like that, the startup items have popped up again on the list. So I have many duplicated items, some checked and some unchecked.

I'm guessing that this explains why spybot wasn't able to update itself when I ran it today (for the first time in forever) - because the service or whatever wasn't there.

What I want to know is, is this a major problem, and should I put it back onto normal start up, or will that eff it up entirely? I certainly can't go on like this, because it seems like uninstalling/installing anything makes my computer not start up properly.
