    Hi,

I'm starting the Read and Run Me First Malware removal procedure. But before that I looked at the "Basic computer maintenance everyone should do."
I want to use Ccleaner to clean up my start up items. By "deleting" start items in Ccleaner there is a warning to be careful. Is this deleting the same as unchecking startup items in msconfig? Or by deleting them in Ccleaner do I permanently delete my ability to have the program startup with my machine?

    Startup Items in question:
Should I leave everything that is under the system32 folder?

    CARPService, also, what is CARPService?

I've included a Screen shot of my Startup Items in Ccleaner for reference. Any advice on what Startup items to delete would be very helpful. Thank you

    Ccleaner permanently deletes startup entries.

Do not use MSconfig. See step 1 of the READ & RUN ME for proper methods to control startups. None of the items in your snapshot are malware. You need to decide for youslef what you use and do not use and take the appropriate actions. Remember this is the malware forum, not the cure all for my PC is slow forum. ;) You should however do the below.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

CARPservice is associated with Zoltrix modems - enables the internal modem speaker, allowing you to listen to the dial-up sounds for example

So, by deleting the Start Up entry does the program permanently lose the functionality of being able to startup with my computer, or can I somehow reactivate the startup capability of a program without having to reinstall it?

    Question on a different topic:
Whenever I have an intallation .exe file, should I delete it after completing the installation?

Also, where should I post future discussion on this? Would the Software forum be more appropriate?

Removing a startup registry key just stops the program from loading when you start your PC. If you read the link in the READ ME (this one Dealing with Startup Processes ) you will see there a tools to renable them if you change your mind later. One thing that you need to be aware is that for some programs, certain functionality or features are meant to be loaded at startup. Like your firewall, antivirus, ....etc.

That's up to you and how much diskspace you wish to waste. ;) You can always download them again unless you have connection speed issues by having dialup (which you may be using since your first message mentioned carpservice). Also do you want to save older versions, if newer versions are available.

Yes! That is where all of these questions belong.
