Startup problems

Hi guys, I'm having problems on startup runnin win98SE. On startup I get a window warning that Mprexe has perfomred an illegal operation and will close. I can go on with startup when I close this but then I get the same warning for Explorer, if I click close on this my desktop completeley disappears! Now, the strange thin is that I can usually still get into explorer by clicking the quickstart button on my toolbar before I click to close the explorer window. When I do go into explorer I get bombarded with popup adverts!

Does it sound like I'm infected with a virus as well as adware???

 

Please follow the steps below:

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis:

Thanks, just noticed the sticky after I posted. I have run Bitdefender and found 1 virus which bitdefender moved but couldn't 'disinfect'. I had trouble DLing RAvAntivirus and Trojanscan due to something to do with ActiveX and my puters settings which I couldn't resolve. Have DL Trend Micro but didn't get a chance to use it yet. I have also DL all the recommended tools.

Will run Trend Micro tonight and then run through the cleaning process. My puter seems to be working better already as the desktop opened when I booted after the bitdefender scan, however, the illegal operation warnings are still there.

I'll post back tomorrow after the attempt to clean up tonight.
