Following the suggestion from the “Malware removal” section, I would kindly like to ask for help regarding the problem I am facing with the startup of the PC, the startup time being more than 30 minutes and after that is all working OK, except the USB ports: also the PC presents a problem communicating with the USB ports despite the fact that it shows that the USBs are working properly. The PC still presents these problems after rootkit-gen[rtk] and viruses where removed.

System info: Windows XP Professional SP3, all updates are at date. 1G RAM and do not have too much running at startup.

Disk cleanup, check local disk and defrag did not improve the situation.

I do have the installation CD with SP2, but I cannot launch Recovery Console because I am getting the message that the PC has a newer version of Windows…

I would appreciate any help to solve the problems with the startup and USB communications ports

Thank you very much for your time

    Sincerely yours

From your hijackthis log, try disabling all startup items except AVAST and ctf.mon using startup cpl from HERE

    Any improvement?

Then, from a command prompt, type sfc /scannow
Note the space between sfc and /.

    What are the scan results?

Then, set a restore point, as this has been known to cause, as well as fix, problems. Download and run, checking all boxes, dialafix from HERE

    Has any of this helped?

Any yellow flags in your device manager? :wave:wave

Thank you very much for your reply and help.
Using startup cpl, I have disabled all, except AVAST and ctfmon.exe and I restarted. No improvement at all in the PC behavior.

I ran sfc /scannow and it just closed by itself after running. Where can I find the results of the scan?

And I have stopped here the recommended steps because I am a bit confused about which restore point shall I choose? One after the malware and viruses removal? System restore was affected so it was deactivated during the cleaning process... Please advice.
I did not run yet dialafix being not sure about the restore point.

Yellow exclamation flags in Device Manager are as follows:
    Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller
    Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter
    Microsoft Kernel DLS Synthesizer
    Microsoft Kernel Audio Descrambler
    Microsoft Kernel GS Wavetable Synthesizer

Thanks you for your time and help

You would set and name a restore point for right now. Just type "restore" in the search programs box and follow the directions.

That said, it would appear you have corrupt audio drivers. You need to go to your computer manufacturer's web site, (Dell, HP, Acer, etc.), and find their support/driver download, and download and reinstall the drivers for your machine.

Sometimes in order to properly update, you need to uninstall the old drivers first. In device manager, just right click on each device with a yellow flag and choose disable or uninstall. Then install the proper drivers and reboot the machine.

Check, yellow flags should be gone.

Do this before the dialafix. I have never had a problem with dialafix but some members here have reported. When running it, check all the options boxes, and let it run undisturbed. :wave:wave

First, the good news are that the startup reduced to aprox 3-5 minutes!!! Thank you a lot!

I uninstalled the 5 audio drivers and the PC installed them back by itself. However, I cannot find them in the device manager list. Where did they go?

I did run the dialafix and it gave me a few errors an iesetup.dll, occache.dll, pngfit.dll, webcheck.dll are not registerable or corrupted. Shall I follow their instruction sending an email to them?

Still running on the USB problem and I have to apologise, YES, of course I have yellow flags there. I did not notice because nothing was connected. I am using some programs with USB HASP and nothing is working, no printer, no USB stick, no HASP, etc...

Many thanks for your useful help

Don't bother sending them a report.

I'm glad you're dpwn to 3 to 5 minutes, though I always aim for under 2 minutes.

Did you go to your computer makers website to look for the drivers? What is your computer, make and model? I coould find it for you.

May help also to reinstall your chipset driver, from same website. Do this one first and reboot. :wave

    or processor? x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~3199 Mhz

    Thank you
