It shows when I hit Crtl-Alt-Delete.

It's slowing down an already slow computer. Do I dare end the process or should I leave it alone?

The only new thing I did today was download Avant browser.

    Running XP.

Okay, I give up. My computer is basically at a standstill. Might as well close it down.

after your computer has been cleaned, if it is still slow, you'll need to see what malware you might have picked up.

It might also help to know WHAT status monitor is running. There are several and we can't guess what you see.
Do a search for exactly what you see and when you find where it is located, go to that location, right click it, select properties and post the version #, company name and the size.

Thanks Plodr, I'll click on that link.

Via Ctrl-Alt-Delete I get the Windows Task Manager which lists Status Monitor. In the past, whenever I've looked to see what's running, it's never shown me Status Monitor.

Right now it also shows Major Geeks and Windows Live Mail.

I searched My Computer for Status Monitor but nothing was found.

    Heading over to that link.

    Hi Plodr, I'm back.

Okay, before I close down my browser I always go to Internet Options and delete things like history, cookies, etc. Once I'm off the Internet, I run Crap Cleaner daily. I ran the registry clean part yesterday and I did it again a few minutes ago. I ran defrag four days ago. I tend to keep things as uncluttered as possible, and I scan with AVG every day. It isn't showing me anything nasty.

What I haven't touched trhough CC is Start Up. If I disenable them in CC, where do they go? I have things like printers and a digital imaging monitor (HP)in there that I do not use every day. How do I move them elsewhere?

I'm super cautious about where I go and usually visits the same three or four sites, Major Geeks being one of them.

Well, this is weird. All of a sudden, my computer decides it's going to run faster. The same thing happened last night about 8:30.

    Something spooky is going on.

Power down to 31.2 Kbps this morning.

Last night, I was refused access to Defrag. Will try to download your defrag program.

Dowloaded Jkdefrag and ran it. Excellent program.

    Updated spywareblaster.

Updated Spybot. Speed down to 21.6. Server crashed, came back in at 45.2 (not fast by my usual speed on dial up).

Why am I getting such changes in speed?

You looked under Applications and all it showed was that you are at the MajorGeeks site and the thread you are viewing is titled status monitor - this has nothing to do with what is on your computer.

Because you are on dialup and the speed changes by the site you are downloading from.

    Thanks, Plodr.

I've updated Spywareblaster and updated and run Spybot. Nothing wrong. AVG didn't find anything either.

The only thing I can think of is that something came in when I downloaded Avant. It's off my computer now and I seem to be back to normal.
