Step 1 Help

    I trying to go through all of the steps to remove malware and viruses from my XP, from the steps given on this site. Unfortunately i am stuck at the very beginning, trying to remove all but one antivirus program. Whenever i try to open up a program, such as from my desktop the "open with" window comes up, and when i access the control panel i click on "add or remove programs" and this pops up:

    C:\\WINDOWNS\System32\rundll32.exe
    Application Not Found

    Does anyone know how to fix this problem, so that i can continue to do the steps for malware and virus removal? Thank You!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
    There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

    Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

    You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif
    Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately try and continue steps in the R&R.

    I tried all four of the tools and none of them worked, i did get different results though:

    1st one:
    Application not found
    2nd:
    "Open with" window
    3rd:
    "Open With" window
    4th:
    Opens up a new tab in my browser says 404- Not Found

    Thanks for trying! Any other suggestions?

    Please download RogueKiller.exe and save it to your desktop.
    • Now quit all running programs.
    • Double click RogueKiller.exe to run it.
    • When prompted, type 1 and hit Enter.
    • A RKreport.txt should appear on your desktop.
    • Note: If the program is blocked, do not hesitate to try several times. If it really does not work (it could happen), rename it to winlogon.exe .
    • Please post the contents of the RKreport.txt in your next Reply.

    Any luck in running the tools now?

    At first the Rouge Killer didn't work even when a renamed it. It would just open up thw "open with" window again. But then i did the EXE association file fix and was able to do the report which is attached. I was also able to access the add or remove programs window and open up programs without the "open with" window. Can i now proceed to doing the steps in the guide? Thanks a million!
