Ok, so I purchased this cpu on ebay thats suppose to be an athlon xp2600. The sticker on the cpu claims its that too. However; the motherboard can't seem to recognize the cpu type. I have it set through bios as the athlon 2600 but, when I tried to run some games (call of duty 2) I got some strange anomalies on the graphics display. I ran a program called memtest86 and when that started running, in the corner of the screen I noticed that it has duron 1250 as the cpu???? Can the cpu be damaged so that it doesn't run at it's suppose ability? but still run?

Sounds like you got screwed on eBay. It's not unheard of for sellers to market an antiquated product (i.e. the ancient Duron) as a newer, similar-looking product (i.e. the not-as-ancient Athlon).
