Sticky? When you have a new computer and don't what to get here?

I am the owner of a new

Dell XPS X8700-1880BLK Desktop

It's been 6 or 7 years about since I last bought a computer. I've bought iPad but not a desktop in quite a time. I searched around this site and couldn't find a sticky or faq that tells you recommended list of what to get when you're starting from scratch. My apologies if there is a post with that in mind.if it's possible maybe make make a sticky of such a topic. I want my new computer to last and don't want to have any security holes or hackers be able to get into my system. Regarding that anyone got any suggestions for that? I've been using kaspersky but I did some googling and they said bit defender is better. So I may look into that. I hope no one starts a flame war with me. I'm just looking for some help. Thank you in advance guys,

 

If by starting from scratch you mean building/buying a new PC, a sticky would be useless, this info changes every 6 months at least. Every* OS has vulnerabilities, best you can do is keeps up with patches / updates.

The second best thing to a good AV software is a good common sense, unfortunately you can't download that, or us techs would be out of business :-D

As for a new PC, it basically depends on what you are going to use it for, and how much money you want to spend.
