Still can't get rid of haxdoor virus....

Ok, I've been thru steps 1 thru 6. I found a few spyware deals with ad-aware. Nothing was found in malicious software removal tool. Not much was found in any of the other scans, and bitdefender and panda scans are attached.

I couldn't run windows defender because it wouldn't install on my system even though I've got SP4 on Win2k? So, I ran CounterSpy instead. It removed a few things I believe.

My virus software (AntiVirus) catches the haxdoor virus every time and alerts me where I choose the "Access Deny" option(over and over and over). The actual alert says that it detects a virus in C:\WINNT\system32\mfreedft.dll which has the signature of BDS/Haxdoor.GJ.1 backdoor server programs.

What do I do now? Thanks for the help, I'm absolutely worn out with this thing.

    Sorry, I forgot...

I'm running Windows 2000, SP4 (even though Windows Defender wouldn't install)

198 Meg Ram. 4.5 Gig Hard Drive.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

The instructions tell you to attach the log from CounterSpy.

Also you need to complete step 7 exactly as written and attach your HJT log.

Thought Hijack was done afterward. Apologize.

    The two scans are attached...

Please refer to step 3 of the READ ME. You have both Antivir and Bitdefender Antivirus programs installed. You must uninstall one of them. Do this now before continuing!!

Now run this About:Buster and save the log to attach later. Follow the directions in the download link!

Now also attach a new HJT log.

I installed about:Buster and ran it. However, because the virus I have won't let me open any type of download from Major Geeks, I can't get the instructions like you said in the download page that tells me how to save the log. Please advise.

I am attaching another HJT log....

Okay let's see what we can remove by hand to get started. The below will not fix everything, but hopefully it will get you into better shape so you can run thru the full procedures and also so you can run about:Buster. Some of the things in the below fix will even come back. Don't worry about it. We need to work this in stages.

First, I had noticed in your first log that you had 3 antivirus applications running (see step 3 of the READ ME). Uninstall ALL but on antivirus application. DO THIS NOW before continuing.

Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'. On the page that opens, scroll down to MicroSoft Media Tools ... then right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    MicroSoft Media Tools

If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.

Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.dll/sp.html

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
C:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temp <---delete all files in this Temp folder. Windows will block a few because they are in use. Just work around them and delete all others.
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\mrde.exe

    C:\WINNT\system32\akrmjcu.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

See if you can run about:Buster now! If so, attach the log from about:Buster!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Ok. I followed your instructions. When I booted back up the system is still acting like it always has been since infection. AntiVir is still finding the virus, and the virus is still trying to spawn in all the normal ways. i.e. at startup, when AntiVir initializes at startup, when IE is opened, and basically when any other program is opened. I have to click Deny Access on AntiVir 16 times for the virus to stop trying to spawn. Then I go thru the same process all over again when I try to open something else....

I couldn't run about:Buster. Which makes sense because I couldn't delete C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\mfreedft.dll, which apparently is the virus. That was the only file on your list that I found but couldn't delete. I did have problems even finding a few others though, and didn't know if it was because of typo's or if they just simply weren't there. Some of the file names were very similar to files that I found, but since they weren't EXACTLY what you had listed I didn't delete them. I attached those files that I couldn't find in the attached file. Also, I attached the latest run of HJT.

...waiting for further instructions. Thank you for your help!

I will be on vacation until 7/31/06 so I'm giving you a bunch of things to do. One of the other Mods or Admins here may be able to pickup where I leave off.

No there were no typo's! HJT may have removed some of the files!

The below steps are still not going to address the about:blank hijacker completely. We still need to get about:Buster to run. Or more complex manual steps will be required.

Did you forget to fix the below line? It is still in your log. I will add it into my next instructions below!
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sysin32.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\sysin32.exe

Download DelDomains and unzip it to your desktop.

Find the files from deldomains.zip on your Desktop and RightClick on the deldomains.inf file and select Install.

Afterwards run Spybot and make sure you re-Immunize immediately.

In this next step to Stop, Disable and Delete an NT Service ONLY FIX THE EXACT SERVICE NAME I GIVE AND NOTHING ELSE THAT LOOKS LIKE IT.

Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'. On the page that opens, scroll down to Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ... then right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste (you have to use copy and paste because you cannot type these characters) the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    %AF夶À¨

If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.

Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.

Now download two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

IMPORTANT: You should print or save the below locally, so you can refer to them while offline. You must exit all browsers before running the below steps and it would be best if you actually physically unplug your cable to the internet, reboot, and do not run anything but what I give you to do. Also it would be good to exit all processes and items in your System tray.

Do the above before continuing! Okay unplug your cable now.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of mfreedft.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the mfreedft.dllunder winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of mfreedft.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.dll/sp.html
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sysin32.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\sysin32.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: mfreedft - C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\mfreedft.dll

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop.
Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files"
Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
Now back on Killbox's main window, Paste the below filenames into KILL BOX one at a time. Check mark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot. Note some of the files listed below may not exist but we need to check for them anyway.
    C:\WINNT\system32\sysin32.exe
    C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\mfreedft.dll

If Killbox does not reboot or you get a Pending Operations type error message just reboot your PC yourself.

Now attach a new HJT log and tell me how the steps went.

Now run the below procedure and attach the runkeys.txt log.
Now run the below procedure and attach the newfiles.txt log.
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Ok. First off, thanks a ton! The old laptop is working much better now.

When I rebooted after Killbox I had no popups from AntiVir where it was finding the Haxdoor virus. I thought I was completely out of the woods, but went ahead and finished the last two steps that you had listed anyway.

BUT....AntiVir did pop up twice while I was installing and running GetRunKey and ShowNew. When it popped up, it was actually something new that had never shown up before. The bad file was C:\my.exe which AntiVir said was a trojan horse TR/Qhost.GN.1. I told the software to delete the file....

I'm attaching the logs per the directions. Maybe one of the other Mods or Admins can advise me if I need to follow up with anything else??

Thank you, this virus has been a nightmare!! Chaslang has been a ton of help and I really appreciate everything!

Run HijackThis. Click the 'Do a system scan only' button. Place a checkmark in the box next to the following lines:
Click on the 'Fix checked' button. Wait for HijackThis to finish; close HijackThis.

    Boot to Safe Mode.

Open Windows Explorer; dlete the following files:
    C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.dll
    C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

    Reboot to Normal Mode.

    Post a fresh HijackThis log.

  12. golf4

    golf4 Private E-2

Ok. I did what you said and deleted the R1 file in the HJT log. I couldn't, however, delete the other two files in safe mode because they weren't there. The only files in the ...Temp directory were .tmp files. There were no .dll's or .html's??? Did HJT delete them for me??

Also, I took a quick look at my new HJT log, and the R1 that you told me to delete is there again??

My computer is SUPER slow now. The original virus is gone (I assume?), but the whole show is running at a snail's pace. Also, when I first boot up in normal mode, I get the following error that pops up in a Windows Pop up:

    ---------
    explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created. {CANCEL}
    ---------

Please advise on what to do now....

Now run this about:Buster and save the log to attach later. Follow the directions in the download link!

Now also attach a new HJT log.

I downloaded about:Buster and ran it. It says it ran Successfully, but, after that, it gave me an error...

    ----
    Run-time error '339':

Component 'comct132.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid
