Still having problems (browser redirecting)

    Hi,
I started having trouble with my computer yesterday -- it began when a bunch of fake virus scan windows suddenly opened up while I was browsing in Firefox. I quickly closed out of everything, but then started having problems with endless alerts from fake antivirus software (Antivirus2008) and with my browser redirecting to ad sites/obscure search engines.

Now I've followed all your (very comprehensive and excellent) instructions and all the fake antivirus software is gone, but my Google searches are still redirecting about half the time. :(

Before I found the instructions on this site, I installed and ran Malwarebites, which cleared off a bunch of stuff but didn't solve the redirecting problem. As a result, I have 2 Malwarebites logs, one from before I found this site, and one that I ran while following your instructions. Sorry for that complication.

Any help would be SO appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your logs are coming up clean. If you are still have redirects on Google using FireFox then let's use a brand new version of MGtools that shows us some additional info.

Goto this link Using MGtools and download the new version of MGtools.exe from the black bold print link in the first sentence. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

Now attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file.

Also do you know what the below new file is for?
    Code:
    "C:\WINDOWS\"
    atngenai Feb 9 2009 2204 "atngenai"

Hmm, no, I have no idea what the atngenai file is...

I just ran the updated MGtools and am attaching my logs.

Thanks so much for the help...

Take a look at it with Notepad or Wordpad to see if you can figure out what it is.

You MUST HAVE your FireFox browser completely shutdown while doing the below. So print this if necessary.

    • Right click Start and select Explore
    • Navigate to the below folder:
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{424194AD-52F7-4548-A995-CC85D84DA449}\chrome\content
    • locate this file overlay.xul
    • Right click on the file and select Delete.
Now run FireFox and see how things are working.

I looked at it and saw URLs for some of the sites that Firefox was redirecting me to (with a space between each character l i k e t h i s). I zipped + then deleted it. I also deleted overlay.xul and now everything is working great.

Again, thank you so much for your help. This site is a wonderful resource!

That was the first and only thing a said you needed to delete.

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
