    Suddenly, I am seeing an exclamation point in the lower-left corner of the download screen, which when I open it, says;

    "Your computer appears to be behind a firewall"...

    to which I can ONLY reply; DUUUUHHHH~DERRRRRRRRRRRRR

    What the HELL hoop does this P.I.AZZ "game" want me to jump through now, please???

    In other words - WHAT DOES THIS ____ DOWNLOAD NEED NOW, please? ? ?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~**EDIT** Please disregard the question(s) about "how" to open ports...I "think" I see how to do that, thanks - but still wondering if by "forwarded" they mean, "opened", please?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Ok, not quite as "Beautiful" as I first thought (ha).

    When they use the term "forwarded" here, do they mean, "Open", please (and good grief, and for Pete's sake, WHY on earth don't they simply say "open", which is the term most commonly used?).

    Blizzard has obviously "forwarded" port 3724 on its own (as I can see this has occurred in the Vista firewall that I have reverted to, from the Comodo Free FW that I had finally gotten quite happy with).

    How might I go about creating the other ports (* - **) they are naming here, please?

    * "World of Warcraft requires that TCP Ports 1119, 1120 and 3724 are forwarded.
    The Blizzard Downloader requires that TCP ports 3724, 1119, 4000, 6112, 6113 and 6114 are forwarded. It can also benefit from having ports 6881 through 6999 forwarded."

    ** "The Blizzard Downloader requires that ports 1119, 1120, 3724 and 6112 are open. It can also benefit from having ports 6881 through 6999 open. "

    "Change (FW) SCOPE", for WoW?

    Is it not more wise, when opening Firewall Ports for an online game, etc., to change the scope of the opening, to "My Network (subnet?) ONLY", please?

    That occurs to me to be MUCH more secure than the default setting of "ANY computer (including those on the internet)", correct?

    Unless I remember very wrong (keep in mind I'm not a networking expert) "port forwarding" is when you open ports in your router, as opposed to in your firewall.

    As I mentioned in your other thread, I don't actually play WoW, but I can show you how I did it with Lord of the Rings Online in the Windows 7 firewall on my laptop. Apologies for the large screenies, but I wanted to be able to show the necessary details. As you can see in the third picture, I have the local and remote ports set the same, since my laptop is behind a router with a competent firewall of its own I'm not too worried about security beyond taking reasonable measures. I leave the paranoia to others. ;)

    First, you open Windows Firewall in your Control Panel, and then go to the Advanced Settings.

    In the advanced settings you then go to the Inbound Rules, find the program you want to edit the rules for (in my case "lotroclient") and then click on Properties.

    In the properties window you go to the ports tab, and there you can either set "all ports" with the drop-down, like I did, or you can type in the specific ones that Blizzard gave you a list of in the box right below there. Note that you need to create one rule for the main game client, and another one for the Blizzard Downloader.

    Wowie-ZOWIE! Thank you much Mims...and frankly I like the large screenies...the better to see (stuff) with!

    I think this will only work - PERFECTLY!

    Thanks again,
    glenn
    PS ~ OOOPS, is this actually setting ports ("forwarding"/opening them) in the router though, or is it still the FW, please?

    What I posted with the pictures is only for the firewall. For your router, you need to go to the router control panel and look at the firewall settings there.

    Well, I've screwed-up here a tiny bit (and that's ALL it takes to throw ME off!).

    My Vista (Home) firewall view/screen, used to look like yours (in 7) does...or very similar to it anyway.

    I think, since I changed some Display settings, and went back to a Windows "Standard" or "Classic" view (in a effort to improve Speed/Performance), I am not seeing things like you do ... and like you showed me here in your screenshots.

    So, I can't seem to be able to change settings, as you have, in my Vista firewall.

    Can you advise, please?

    Thanks again and in advance,
    g...

    Port forwarding helps the router make the link from, incoming wow data to your specific desktop that is receiving the updates/downloads. Port opening, makes your allowing your computers firewall to pass traffic through said port.

    Thanks for that breakdown...I knew it was all for purposes of continuity and security - now all I have to do is figure-out HOW to get `er done......

    Thanks again just the same......
