Still no good answer to LuCallBackProxy problem Yet

I've had horrendous problems with LuCallbackProxy.exe last couple of weeks.

I e-mailed Symantec (Norton) for advice and help. They just been e-mailing back to reinstall Norton Internet Security. No Help here.

I gather from many forums I have read that the file is supposed to be Norton’s process residing as a hidden file in C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate. It has a brethren LUCALLBACKPROXY.EXE-29128DB6.pf in C\WINDOWS\prefetch. It’s supposedly used by the Norton suite of programs to update virus and software definitions?

I have an XP SP2 machine hooked up to the Internet by 100 Megabit cable modem. Whenever I turn the computer on, in short time the LuCallbackProxy.exe spawns itself into 3 to 5 copies and eats up 100% of my CPU resources. This may go on for a few to tens of minutes. Then the processes disappear and I can do work again since CPU usage drops down to the normal baseline of 5 to 15%. But 5 to 30 minutes later we are back to square one. Since I Play a MMOPG this kills me during game play and in some cases even leads to a game crash.

Deleting the processes in Prefetch manually using the Windows Explorer works, but only temporarily, maybe for one cycle. I have tried to use several tricks, even checking/fix Registry with PC Tools Reg Mech and it seems to help but not for long. Now, I know some people have no use for Norton's but I have used them since back in the late 70s and they have saved me more than once from bad virus and trojan infections. Maybe the answer is just to uninstall and try another virus program but I would like to fix this issue. I know that many others have this same problem and there has to be a correct answer. Help!

Have you tried turning off automatic Live Update?

Which version of the Symantec/Norton product are you using?

It may be that you need a complete clean out of the Symantec/Norton product then re-install. A clean tool can be found here: http://majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html Note this tool with remove all your Norton products, so make sure you have the install disk/media and product keys before you clean.

Yes, I have tried turning off Live Update.

I use Norton Internet Security 2007

I used the Norton Removal tool several months ago but it did not last out the problem.

It seems to me there must be a basic flaw in the Norton's CallBack code that would allow spawning more than one version on any routine. Or there is some key element in windows that is allowing it.

Excuse the verbosity of my reply... :)

I presume turning off LiveUpdate had no effect and that your LuCallback process still spawned? Can you check your LU settings using the control panel applet for LiveUpdate? What does it have for the update interval (see attachment)? Does changing this interval have an effect? Also, tell me what are the general and update cache settings. Have you run Live Update manually without errors? Does the MS Windows event log record any LU failures? If so, what are they?

I know that it does not help you but I have NIS 2007 on a number of computers running Vista and XP without any issues. Which version of Windows do you have?

Perhaps there is something else that had interfered with the NIS product. It was thought at one time that Spybot Search and Destroy cannot co-exist with NIS, do you have that? Do you have any other similar products on your system performing similar functions of NIS? Do you have a clean Anti-virus and Anti-malware or Anti-spyware scans? Are you up-to-date with MS Windows updates? Maybe running through this process may clean out a few gremlins: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 and attach various logs in the Malware forum.

Finally, after all that we could try looking into the dependencies of LuCallback and see if anything in the DLLs that is causing issues.

Turning off Live Update in Norton Settings had no effect.

Update interval page was exactly as you showed in your attachment

Cache size is 10 megs. At your suggestion, I changed the update interval to 360 minutes and will see if I see any effect.

Maunally running update is error free.

Windows event log shows no associated errors logged. One interesting note, when I tried to get a Report log, I did get an error, send to microsoft type and the log would not open. HOw do I easily get an MS Windows Event Log? Running Windows XP with SP2, all updates are current with Microsoft - I use Windows auto Update.

Yes I have SpyBot Search and Destroy - latest version. One note - today I tried running AVG and its update feature for the latest version still has errors and crashes the program - so I removed the program in add/remove programs. In its last two scans recently, I had nothing other than the normal cookies removal anyway. I ran CCCleaner in normal windows mode and PC Tools Registry Mechnic, checked the add/remove programs for any on your Malware list and found none, just for good measure.

Because I am running a wireless network on my cable internet, the hardware firewall on the wireless is ON in addition to Norton's Firewall is running. All appears normal. Windows Firewall is turned off as requested via Norton's checks.
