    Hello folks

I’ve been checking some of my old hard drives to see if there are any files I need to save off them.

Unfortunately I plugged in a hard-disk that I forgot had an active Windows XP partition into my PC and it has damaged my Windows XP installation on the computer I was using.

After the Windows splash screen appears as it tries to load, I get the BSOD with the message:

    “STOP: c000021a Fatal System Error”

I cannot boot Windows XP at all, Safe Mode just hangs while starting.

I went to the recovery console and tried registering Dr Watson but it wouldn't work.

I tried using the Windows XP disc to repair but it went straight to the recovery console.

I tried reinstalling XP but it has made no difference.

I put in a Windows 7 disc and tried using the repair option but it does not detect a Windows installation and comes up with an error message saying:

    “MissingBootManager”

I then used the Win 7 disc and went to the Command Prompt and typed in: “bootrec.exe /REBUILDBCD” but that detected no Windows installation either.

Does anyone know how I can rescue this please?

    Many thanks in advance.

Is your hard drive detected in the bios ?

Hi folks, thanks for the replies

In fact it was a hard disk with Ubunu 10 on it that I plugged in. I forgot the disk had an operating sytem on it.

It seems to have damaged the MBR on my Windows XP C: drive.

I've tried replacing winlogon.exe and the .dlls mentioned with good ones but with no effect.

I created a streamed Win XP SP3 install disk and tried to do a Windows repair but it made no difference.

I've been using Hirens BootCD mini XP to access the drive and save all my important work.

I will try using the FIXMBR command from Windows recovery console once I have saved my work to an external HDD.

Is this a good course of action?

    Thanks
