Stopping Win 10 Updates To 1803

I just changed my ISP, and I didn't think to check my internet setting for metered connections. I had a notice that updates were pending but I needed to restart. I don't want to update at this point, I prefer to let updates cook before applying.

I currently have vers. 1709, Home edition. Drivers current per manufacturers website (HP).

There are four pending updates, including two from Windows, one from HP, and one from nVidia for the graphics card. I definitely don't want to install the nVidia update, I prefer to get that direct from HP.

    I read the article at
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/content/page/how_to_delete_pending_windows_updates.html .

I THINK that's what I want to do, but I would like some reassurance that it won't cause me grief, especially as I have the aforementioned Home edition. Are there any other gotchas I should be on the lookout for?

I also read the article at
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/content/p...s_from_downloading_drivers_on_windows_10.html

I'm not finding the option to stop driver downloads. I had previously set this to not allow MS to d/l driver updates, but it apparently didn't stick. Did MS move that setting? Remove it? It's not appearing where it should.

The computer is an HP notebook. I don't dare run it on batttery power for very long as I don't want to accidentally re-boot after a power-down.

Hubris is the sister of that other biotch, Karma! Here I was thinking I knew almost everything!

Any guidance or illumination would be greatly appreciated.

p.s.- It almost seems like MS was just waiting to pounce on my connection for such an opportunity! But that would just be paranoia, right? :)

UPDATE: I just learned that my HP Notebook (Envy 17-s010nr) has not been tested with the 1803 update. So now I'm sure I don't want this installed until HP gives the all-clear.

Unless I hear otherwise on this forum, I'll proceed with the steps outlined on MG on how to delete pending updates, probably in the next day or two.

Thank you, excellent info, including the caution about such apps needing to be current. Just in case, you know, MS decides to change the rules again. Not that they would ever do that. Whack-a-mole anyone?

The video and the download page both mention installation of the program, but there is a link to the portable version, which I d/l'd, and will run probably tomorrow. Memorial Day and adult beverages don't contribute to successfully dealing with O/S issues, methinks.

I'll also have to do something about drive E: being hijacked. That's the drive letter assigned to my USB drive for routine data & image backups, using MS Disk Manager. All very annoying.

    Thanks again,

Thanks, but yesterday I went through the procedure for deleting pending updates. I still haven't decided if it totally worked.

I'm not positive, but I think part of the nVidia update snuck thru, as I had to re-visit the telemetry settings. The instructions here on MG appear to be out of date. But maybe that's ok.

Instead of going through the net stop/start WuAuServ procedure, I used stopupdates10. That worked for me, allowing me to delete the SoftwareDistribution directory (actually, renamed it .old). No pending updates appear.

The one downside, I had to download the Defender update via MG instead of just clicking the update button in Defender. I might try unblocking Win Updates temporarily for updating Defender, then applying the block again. Sounds like a minor PITA. (I have re-set my internet connection to metered so I won't get caught in that trap again.)

Still early days, but I haven't found any problems with deleting the Win Updates. When I finally decide it's time to update, we'll see if I'm still happy. I'm not sure why HP hasn't given it's blessing to 1803. I've always waited for updates to finish cooking before applying.

I don't have a VM set up at the moment, baklogic, so testing 1803 that way is not an option at this time. But I've bookmarked the thread.

I'm guessing my experience with this is unique on the MG forums, but if anyone has any questions about what I did, I'll be happy to answer. (Mainly what I did was stumble around in the dark and find the light switch without falling down the stairs!)

BTW & FWIW: after deleting SoftwareDistribution and/or turning off Windows Updates via the above, the E: drive doesn't show up any more. However, Disk Management now shows dual entries for the Recovery (D:) drive, one marked NTFS, the other blank; also what had been listed as the E: drive I think is now listed as Disk 0 partition 1, and partitions 2 and 3 still appear. Just not in Windows Explorer or other file managers. I actually don't know what any of this means, but it looks somewhat interesting? <vbg>

Thanks again for taking the time to reply, baklogic, much appreciated.
