This is not a cry for help but a general inquiry about the spyware program Stopzilla. I was looking for spyware software reviews today for spyware. I came across a site called 6 Stars Reviews and they were giving Stopzilla 5 1/2 stars, so I decided to check it out. First off, I have paid subscriptions for Spyware Doctor, Counterspy, and Spysweeper. I also have Windows Defender, Spybot, and adware. Plus Zone Alarm and Avast antivirus. Each one of these programs autoruns throughout the day about everyother hour. With the exception of Counterspy I can continue work unimpeded. Counterspy does not like it when I try to do other things, like surf., but it will let me use Word. I write medical texts and the majority of sites I go to are medically related or education sites. I also check out most of the news sites on the Advanced toolbar for medical news and world news. I also vist ZD Net and today I googled software reviews for spyware.
I downloaded Stopzilla and ran it and it came up with about 300 instances of malware, bhos, and other garbage. 275 of these was associated with IE. I only use IE to download windows material, otherwise I use Opera and Firefox.
A lot of references came up related to porn sites. I don't do porn and I do not visit sites that would have any relationships to porn sites.
I am the only user of this particular computer. My wife has her own and she does not use mine. I live in the mountains 50 miles away from civilation and I know, no one else has has access to this computer.
None of the spyware programs I ran today came up with any of this material. It was totally clean as far as I could tell before I downloaded Stopzilla. Even spyware doctor auto erases cookies when I visit web sites.
Now, if Stopzilla had found 3,4, or 5 instances of cookies or malware the other programs missed, I could understand that, but over 300??
Spyware Doctor picks up things sweeper and the other programs miss. Adware picks up stuff all the other programs miss, so I feel pretty certain my machine is clean.
So my question is this: Are the programs I have right now really that bad they would miss all this stuff?
Is Stopzilla cheating by saying you've got all this junk and only our program will work?
After I deleted Stopzilla from my computer I ran Hijack this and found nothing unusual. One other thing, at the end of everyday I run Crap Cleaner so I cant imagine how I accumulated all this stuff in a few hours because a lot of it was temp files.
So, maybe if someone out there could try this program and let me know if you came up with similair results. Sorry for the long post. I use Windows XP SP 2,1 gig ram, updated every tuesday. Firefox and Opera main browsers.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Stopzilla is not something that I would recommend using. I would like to see a log of what it is actually reporting. Can you save a log and post it here as an attachment to your message?

    Re: Stopzilla logs

Well this illustrates one reason why we do not recommend StopZilla. The detections about ZoneMap are all wrong. They are put in your registry by tools like Spybot, SpywareBlaster and others, to protect you from bad sites. StopZilla just is not smart enough to know the difference between things in the Restricted Zone versus the Trusted Zone.

Uninstall it and don't use it anymore. Use the tools we recommend in: How to Protect yourself from malware!
