WinXP Home SP2, all updates installed. ABit motherboard KN9, AMD x2 4200+.
Here's the deal: a couple of weeks ago, I did a clean install on this PC- formatted the drive, installed WinXP and all drivers. I went to do the updates, and the first updates installed (Windows Publisher, MS Installer 3.1, etc) without incident, nice and smooth. I rebooted as required, and went to finish the updates. The updates wouldn't install and kept erroring before they'd even start downloading. So I posted a thread here, was given a link to a fix, I followed the link/fix, and all was good; the updates installed. I thought all was well. But now, ANYTHING I download from the internet, from ANY web site, will download just fine, but will not install. I get lots of different errors but the most common is something about the source file being corrupt. I ran a diag on the RAM, it passed 100%. I swapped out the ethernet cable. Still the problem. So I tried to reload the ethernet and chipset drivers from the mobo CD; that errored out also. No message, just an empty box with '1155:' in the top left corner. Any ideas? Should I just wipe and reload? If there's a quick fix I'd rather try that first...... THANX!

OK- I just managed to get a screen shot of the error message. It's a zipped .bmp

Thanx for the info. But I get this same error for EVERYTHING that I download. Even programs that don't have the NSIS logo. Even zipped files won't unzip. They error out with the same '...file may be corrupt...' message; I'm not sure if zips also have the NSIS listed at the top... I'll have to find a zip to download and look a little closer when I try to extract it....

I couldn't find an uninstaller at the NSIS Sourceforge site. I've submitted an email requesting the uninstaller along with the screenshot above and a description of my problem. It's really strange, but the error seems to effect all downloaded files (even zips won't unzip), and it also effects many (not all) other files that I try to install. Like I said above, I couldn't install the MB drivers from the original factory CD..... I've been busy and haven't tried the MS Installer clean up tool yet; I'm going to try it today....

OK- tried the MS Installer cleanup tool... no dice. I did try some other stuff, but still nothing. So I did a safe reload of WinXP. Now, I can unzip downloaded zip files, but still cannot install downloaded programs (.exe's for example). Attached is a zipped .bmp of the current error message I get. It's different than the one I posted above. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

What, if any, real time protection is running on the machine?

ASR.exe is a start up file so I'm thinking any sort of real time is set to high or is just blocking any file it deems a threat.

AntiVir and Spyware Terminator are the 2 protection apps, and NVidia firewall is running too (it was on the mobo CD). ASR is Advanced Spyware Remover- I was using it as a 'test' file to see if it errored out. I also tried PCWizard and Everest as test files. They error out too. Like I said, it only seems to apply to downloaded files. If I install something from a CD or my thumb drive, it installs just fine... it's the weirdest thing, EVER! When trying to install a downloaded program, it goes thru all the intro type stuff like 'Language' and 'Application Path' and all the other stuff you just click Next on; when it gets to actually installing the program, it errors out......

You probably already checked this but when you download the setup.exe for a program, before you run it, right click on it and check the properties.

Depending on the security settings there might be a message saying something like "This file was downloaded and is being blocked . . ." blah blah. Make sure you unblock the file before you run it.

Like I said you probably did this already but it doesn't hurt to ask. :p
