Strange form of about:blank

    Hi All,

I'd very much appreciate any advice on a rather strange form of about:blank that I seem to have. It hasn't hijacked my browser (IE7) and I don't sense any undue usage of my PC resources or time lapses. However, when I browse eBay, if I click to see a particular listed item, and then click 'Watch this item', when I click the back button on my browser to go back to my search listing I briefly see the message 'waiting for about:blank' in the panel at the foot of the page and the browser frefuses to back up, unless I click back multiple times.

Presumably I've got some remanent of about:back hanging around my system somewhere, but none of the usual software can find it (Superantispyware, AVG, etc.) I'd welcome any suggestions.

    All the best
    Richard

    Welcome,

This does not sound like a problem at all. And this has absolutely nothing to do with what a true about:blank hijacker would do. It just sounds like the pages you are on do not allow the Back button to be used. Many websites do this. It is really a pain in the butt. I usually just get around this by click the little down arrow next to the Back button and select the link I want to go to from that list.

Do you have problems on other sites navigating around? Like here on Majorgeeks! If not, it is probably just some silly thing to do with how eBay (which I don't use) works.

    Hi,

Many thanks for your response which is much appreciated. There are three things that lead me to think it is an infection or remanent of an infection: The first is that it is new in recent weeks (eBay has never behaved like this in the past). Second is that when I attempt to use the back button, the system hesitates and the legend "waiting for about:blank" appears in the bar at the foot of the IE page. And third is that if I click Back three times, it does in fact overcome whatever the obstacel is and work properly.

Any further thoughts would be most welcome.

    Regards
    Richard

If it only happens on eBay, I doubt that it is malware. If you really want to check for malware, I will give you the procedure below. It may or may not find malware problems, but even if it does, they may not be the cause of your issue with eBay.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
