I'm working on a PC that has a strange problem. If I launch IE6, I can surf without any problems, I'm using the PC to type this.... but nothing else can connect it seems.... MalwareBytes cannot update, SUPERantispyware cannot update, AVG can't update, etc.... Windows Firewall is off, and as far as I can tell, there's no other firewalls or security software installed. The PC is running Windows XP MCE with SP2... any thoughts?
    Thanks!

(I have 'rebuilt' the Winsock registry entries and installed new TCP/IP, I've run LSPFix... still the issue persists :confused )

And you did a malware check?

Check the hosts file to be sure security software isn't blocked.
When I couldn't update AVG on one computer (the others worked fine), it took me days to discover there was an entry for the update server in my hosts file. I know I didn't put it there. I keep it in there commented out just in case it gets in again, I can compare the entries.

Can you go to the Windows Update site and get that to work?

I did a malware scan (several, actually) and the PC was loaded with malware. So, everything updates fine now that the PC is clean, except for AVG Free 8.5. So, thanks to plodr's advice, I will check the hosts file. It seems that there is no longer a manual update for AVG like there was with v7.5. There's this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/AVG_Anti-Virus_Update_d4478.html but the description says it is not for the free AVG. So, if anyone has any tips as to why everything is perfect now except for AVG's updates, feel free to speak up!

OK- so I checked the host file and it's clean. I've checked the TCP/IP settings, and they're also normal. I checked the AVG forum for any possible fixes for update issues and have yet to find anything useful, but I'm still looking.....

If the computer is formatted FAT32, there is a problem updating AVG, at least 8.0 in windows 2000 (I'm not sure if this applies to XP). I discovered that yesterday when reading the AVG site to figure out why one computer (yup formatted FAT32) refuses to update and the other two do so with no problem.
Temporary work around...Open AVG and click on Tools, then Advanced Settings then Update and finally Manage. Use the button to delete the temporary update files.

There might be a way to manually grab updates but I haven't found that yet. If I stumble across it, I'll post.

Hmmmm.... no, it was an NTFS system, but the REALLY weird thing is that the exact same thing has happened on a different PC, but this time it's a CLEAN install. I formatted the hard drive this morning, performed a flawless install of XP Home SP2, installed all the drivers perfectly, and everything works fine EXCEPT for the AVG updates. Thinking maybe my source file on my flash drive was to blame, I installed AVG on a different PC using the same source file on my flash drive; this 2nd PC was also just formatted and a clean XP Home installed. AVG works fine on the 2nd PC!!! It updates perfectly! But on the other one, it doesn't. I have no answers and even fewer ideas on this one. VERY STRANGE!

Sorry, no answers here either. I got an update error last night on a working computer then a few minutes later it went away by itself!
Personally, I think AVG's servers are overloaded. Couple that with a large download, if I remember close to 70MB and it is no wonder I keep getting an error about not being able to connect with the server.

I think I'll study these FAQs before I install the newest version.
