Strange Problem With Startup, Due to Virus?

I'll just explain exactly what happens.

So, I power up my computer, goes through the start up screen fine, I don't have a log in screen, and like on most computers, the desktop shows up first. However, with mine, it stops there. Only the desktop background picture shows up along with a pop up about the Worm.Win32.Netsky virus. Unfortunate, right? Even after I close out the pop up, it stays on the Desktop background. It won't respond to the menu keyboard button. I can access the Ctrl+Alt+Del menu, but from there I can only get to Shut Down, Log off, but not Task Manager.

I turned off the computer, (Lenovo Thinkpad T61) and turned it back on and got into Rescue and Recovery and it's currently scanning for the virus, but I don't know what to do if it doesn't find it.

Guys, I have an important final on Tuesday, and my college's computer support doesn't open until Monday. My notes are all on this computer that I need for my study guid, and this is just a bad situation all over the place. Could someone maybe explain what is happening?

Did you have any luck? If not, then you need to see if you can run in safe boot mode. If not, then the solutions are not really going to be too quick since there is not too much we can do for you remotely unless you can bootup and run some scans.

If you cannot boot the PC in any boot mode ( safe, last known good, normal) then there is not much we can recommend but the below:

Try restoring to an older registry hive using the Recovery Console as per the below. This assumes you have Win XP since you did not even tell us what version of Windows was in use.

Take the hard disk out and scan it in another well protected PC

Use another PC to make a special CD which you can boot from to try and run virus and spyware scans or to at least backup data. CDs like the below:
