What i am experiencing is when i have my home page up---i try to go to a different site and the page will close or get the msn error message, even when i click on one of my favorites---only way to get to a different site is hold the ctrl key down and then click on a site i want to go to. I tried going to add/remove to try and repair ie6 but it will not let me repair it. I also tried to over install ie6 and says i have latest version---i can't even uninstall ie6--not sure why? This is what i have: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
    MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180).
as i said it is strange having to hold the ctrl key down to go to other sites. any suggestions will be helpful. One more thing. i do not have a pop up blocker enabled--that was my first choice to check. Is there a way to uninstall ie6 and reinstall it---i have tried to uninstall and again it will not let me. All help thanked

Have you attempted to make sure you are 100% virus and spyware free??

You would be amazed how the least bit of spyware/malware can screw up a system!!!!

Check out the link below for instructions on how to make sure your system is clean!!!!

Used ad-ware se------spybot search and destroy---ccleaner---spywareblaster---even did a hijack log and removed items not pertaining to computer---still either get error message and/or the page shuts down unles i hold the ctrl key down---i no most times this happens when a pop up stopper is enabled but i have no pop up stopper installed------the confusing part of the whole thing is when i go to add/remove and click on the ie6 there and try to click repair---it will not let me even do that----and definitely can't over-ride ie6 with a new download---will not let me do that as well---would like to just remove ie6 and reload it--but still not exactly sure how/where to go about dong that----went to programs/internet explorer/setup---there is no uninstall file there. could it be that i am missing he particular file andthis is why i am having problems and if so --how can i correct this------as i said it is very strange---thank you for the help

ok this is what i got from microsoft crash analysis:

If Internet Explorer continues to crash, please try the following procedure. This will turn off all add-ons that may be causing problems with Internet Explorer.

To turn off all add-ons, follow these steps:

Close all open Internet Explorer windows.
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    Double-click Internet Options.
    Click the Advanced tab.
Under Browsing, click to clear the Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart) check box.
    Restart Internet Explorer.

after i did that---i first got the error 999 !!!!!!!!!!
then it started working---now i can go to sites without holding the ctrl key down, but my main concern now is by unclicking that third-party browser---am i gong to experience additional problems? so here is a list of the items checked and unchecked in the browsing section---do they look ok?

items checked in advanced tab browsing

    browsing.........always send urls as utf-8
auntomactically check for internet explorer updates
close unused folders in history or favorites
    disable script debugging
    both script debugging is checked
enable folder view for ftp sites
    enable install on demand
enable offline items to be synchronized on a schedule
    enable page transitions
enable visual styles on buttons and controls on web page
    notify when download completes
    reuse windows for launching shortcuts
    show friendly http error messages
show go button in address bar
    =======================================================

    items unchecked in advance

display a notification about every script error
    enable install on demand (ie)
    enable page transitions
    enable personalized favorites menu
    enable third party browser entenstion
forces offscreen compositing even under terminal server
    notify when download complete
    show friendly http error messages
    show friendly url's

this was all in the advance part under browsing

    thank you for the help

I would tend to agree with rogvalcox and not rule out a virus or spyware.
Do all the steps in the link to make sure you are certain you have a clean machine before messing around with uninstall/reinstalling IE. You may also want to give Firefox a try.
