ok here is my latest issue: i recently restarted my computer and when it restarted it went into check disk for error mode as if it had not been properly shut down. so i waited for a while, and that turned into hours, and more hours. eventually i went to sleep and awoke to see that it was still checking the disk for errors. as i have had to shut down my computer before due to it freezing, i have seen how fast it checks the disk for errors, usually taking no more than 3 mins. well this time it was taking more than two mins to gain each percent. when i awoke as i said before i noticed that it had reported there were no errors, but went on to check it again. so i assume that as i slept it just kept checking over and over. i shut it down and restarted and skipped the disk error check. once i got onto my desktop everything seemed to be working fine, i did a virus scan, adaware, spybot, and hijack this and eveything seemed to be ok. i furthur more went to trendmicro to do an online scan and nothing turned up. all of my prgrams seem to be working fine, so i am really confused. Around the time that this happend i had a virus called Java BYte Verify and i thought that i removed it, at least it is not turning up on the scan anymore, and i had a windows update, and thats about all i can think of. i have run check it diagnostics on my drives only to turn up a clean report. the problem is more of anoyance than anything... everytime i restart it happends all over again. i cant figure it out. can anyone help.

i dont know what is important to let you know, but i am using windows xp pro, acer ferrari 3200(notebook), norton antivirus, adaware, spybot search and destroy, spywareblaster and hijack this.
    what do you recomend.

Do you get the same problem if you just start an Error check on your own? If so, disconnect your cable to the internet and shut down all process especially your antivirus application. If you have any real time spyware blockers running (like Spysweeper, MS Antispyware etc) make sure you shut them down too.

Then run and Error check. What happens?

after i posted my issue i made sure i followed all the steps that were indicated in this topic, ie: uncheck safe mode, uncheck show hidden files, install all the indicated tools and reboot in safe mode, online scans and running the tools. once i did all of that and i reboot, the disk errors began to check again. this time i just let it run, took about 4 hours and this time it was reporting fixing some bad cluster repeairs giving references to some specific files... the strange thing is the files it was referencing were "line in record" files that i the day before created. the files were created using my line in record on my creative media source software. A strange thing about that is while i was Dj'ing i was recording in wav format, and after 3:22 of recording it kept saying that there was no disc space left. funny thing is i have more than 30Gb there so i just started a new recording. I will try to figure out if there is some maximum option for recording. does anyone know if windows has a default setting for the amount of space that can be placed into one file at a time? who knows. but after following those steps indicated at the begining of "spyware specific" - i must say my computer seems to be booting up faster and running as smooth as when i first bought it... thanks.

There were limits for a 1GB file size (and some software does limit to that) but I do not believe that is necessary for Win XP. You may be able to get the answer in the Software Forum.

Chas, if I may, what he stated about
led me to believe he got infected by the Trojan.ByteVerify.
If so, Zoglogic I'd recommend you read the info on this page. If you need further help with the disinfection process Chas could help you, I just hope that I am wrong about that nasty Trojan.
    ;)
