Streaming (?) videos

Many web sites have commercials in the form of movies or TV ads, some news is a segment of the TV nightly news. I am lumping all into what I think is called streaming.
Anyway, the sound on most of them is jerky or choppy on my computer. I picture someone with a mute button switching sound off and on several times a minute. But the visual portion is clear, and smooth.
My internet server is AT&T's UVerse (cable)
My TV is also UVerse, but I have no problems with the sound on it.
Someone want to venture in on the cause, and possible solutions?
Would appreciate it.
