Stubborn do not show hidden files

Hello:

I have a malware problem and am trying to follow the steps in the Read an Run me First thread.

However, I can't get my PC to show the hidden files. I had previously posted this problem under the "software" category and I was offered a script to fix it, but the problem persists.

My question is, do I continue with the following steps of the Read & run me first or do you have any suggestion on how to tackle this.

What happens is that I do check the "Show hidden files" option, then apply, close the window, and when I check back, it is again "Do not show hidden files..".

There must be something blocking the change. Are you running Norton or is Spybot's Teatimer enabled?

Hello:

No. I don't have neither Norton nor Spybot installed. My antivirus is Avast and I don't have a firewall other than XP's own.
