Hi, I have WXP with the Comodo Firewall (though have never managed to get it to update), SpywareBlaster and SuperAntiSpyware (running weekly).

Couple of months back SAS picked up some Malware for the first time in ages, removed it but it or similar kept re-appearing. So ran through the full Malware Removal procedure but still the Malware is coming back (each process seemed to execute okay). I've attached all the logs, including the starting and more recent SAS logs.

In the mean time SAS was uninstalled twice but not by a user!

Please would you take a look. Many thanks

    John

Your new posts were moved to a new thread. You posted in a thread that was 2 years old.

Your last log from SUPERAntiSpyware is from an extremely out of date version of the program. You must UNINSTALL this. Then down, install, and update after install the version given in the READ & RUN ME.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )
Now download TDSSKiller from Kaspersky to your directly onto your Desktop
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor. )
    • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123tdk.com).
    • Allow the application to run if prompted by Windows or any security programs you have installed
    • It will start the scan and run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )
Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

Now run a new scan with the NEW version of SUPERAntiSpyware and attach the new log.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the log from MBRcheck
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • the SUPERAntiSpyware log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Hi, many thanks for sorting out my post.

I have downloaded and installed the up to date version of SAS, (the old version must have been an old copy on my harddisk that I re-installed when it had somehow been uninstalled),
    run MBR check,
    run TDS SKiller,
run ComboFix, (only problem in execution was that it counldn't access the "Recovery Console")
    run SAS, (some adware found)
    run MGTools/Getlog.bat.

    Logs attached.

On a quick look the PC is working okay. Apart from the Malware that has kept coming back the thing that alarmed me most was that SuperAntiSpyware was somehow uninstalled.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Regards

    John

Your ComboFix log is very incomplete. This may be because you did not disable all protection before running it. ComboFix showed that Comodo was still enabled. You should really disable all protection and repeat the fix from the start of ComboFix thru to the end so we can be sure that all was fixed. You just need to attach the new ComboFix log and the new log from MGtools ( MGlogs.zip ). We don't need the other logs.

Hi, yes I had trouble with Comodo re-starting after the re-boot. Now sorted so a much longer log from ComboFix and the one from MGTools too.

Hope this makes more sense now.

I found that I had both Comodo and Windows Firewall running so I have turned off the Windows Firewall. Is that okay?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Best Regards

Yes this is better. Your logs are clean now.

Yes you must never have more than one firewall enabled similar to only on antivirus program being installed.

    How are things working now?

Hi, the PC seems to be working well. However SAS is still finding these Adware Tracking Cookies, as in the attached log.

Do you think I should do something more?

    Thanks

Cookies are not problems as you will learn when you read the link given in my final instructions below. In fact in our instructions for setting up SUPERAntiSpyware, we even told you to disable reporting on cookies because doing this is a waste of time and misleading.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
