stuck downloading adaware

geeks,
I need help, my computer (4 1/2 years old, I have PCillin virus protection) has been crashing and problematic for a couple weeks. It had been stuck on the "restore my active desktop" page for days when my friend said to try system restore. I tried getting to start, programs, accessories .... before i stuck on ("restore....") and on the 4th try was surprised to be able to restore it to May 1st. The next thing I tried to do was install adaware,( I got to where it listed all the files and was not sure what to do and another friend said I should probably delete all of them) it got to quarenting files and deleting files and it stuck there deleting. On my second try to download it stuck in the middle of the download.( a screen saver came up if that may have interfered with the second try)
Any suggestions?
I've heard this is a great forum I hope you can help.

There are alot of popups appearing they say i will win all sorts of stuff (the gas was hard to resist) Is that possibly what I need to clear up first?

user your F8 key during boot to choose "safe mode" Press it about every second after your first beep, until you get a menu that includes safe mode.

Let it boot then run adaware there and let it finish. You don't need to download it again. Don't worry about updating your definitions yet. You won't have internet access while in safe mode, but most startup things won't be there either, so you'll have a better chance at killing the bad stuff.

That worked very well.
Now shall I go to "Read this before you ask for support" or follow my friends advice and install: Spybot search and destroy, spyware blaster, and luke file walker? and will I be better of going into safe mode for thier installation?

Wow,
I went through the suggested moves in the " read this before you ask for support" !
It took hours, how will I be sure this is all done and things are working properly? I don't sit at the computer for long periods of time like that.
