My brother has an asus notebook pc - x202e running Windows 8 64 bit. He brought it to me because it is stuck in an automatic repair. Everytime the computer is started it begins automatic repair and no matter how long you let it run it never comes out of it. The same thing happens if you hit F8 and try to repair from there. (He has let it go for a couple days.) I have no idea if it had any suspect behavior before this started because he lets the kids use it and they never said anything (and they are kids...) I also tried to reset the pc from the F8 menu but it just goes and goes and goes. We let it run overnight.
So I started googling the issue and came across this
So I followed those steps. (The results of each are in blue)
get cmd to open and check
    bootrec /fixMBR
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
    bootrec /Fixboot
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
    bootrec /rebuildBCD
Scanning all disks for Windows installations.
Please wait, since this may take a while...
    Successfully scanned Windows installations.
    Total identified Windows installations: 0
    The operation completed successfully.

    chkdsk /r c:
CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.

The only other thing we could find was to run FARBAR, so we did. I have attached the log.
I'm pretty sure the computer is screwed, and I've warned my brother of this, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.
Also there are no discs or anything that go with the computer. And he didn't make a recovery usb when he got the computer.

    Hi

Is it possible that this laptop was dropped? just wondering if the I/O errors are linked to the drive not being fully connected.

Enter the BIOS and double check that the C: drive is the boot drive and save and exit.

When using F8 to boot did the laptop enter automatic recovery mode each time? if so did you try Shift + F8 to manually get to the recovery modes? maybe worth a try if not done so already and get to Advanced Repair and Start-up Options and see if that helps.

It's absolutely possible it was dropped, like I said his kids used it, including the 5 year old. We also wondered if a cable was loose, but we wanted to explore every other option before opening it up.
In bios under boot option priorities it only lists windows boot manager. I don't see c anywhere.
As for f8 it's actually f9 lol Pressing that brings up the following menu:
    Continue
Exit and continue to windows 8
    Troubleshoot
Refresh or reset your pc, or use advanced tools
    Turn off your PC

    The troubleshoot menu
Refresh your pc. (doesn't do anything)
Reset your pc (runs and runs and never gets anywhere)
    Advanced options

    That menu is
System restore (says there are no restore points)
System image recovery (says No image on computer)
    Automatic repair (doesn't work)
Command prompt (which is how we ran the scans and farbar)
UEFI firmware settings (haven't messed with because I know nothing about it)
Startup settings (just restarts the computer)

I'm probably going to call my brother and see If he'll give my husband permission to open it up.
