Stuck on Dell BIOS Screen

Upgraded monitor from Samsung SynMaster 753MB (flat screen CRT) to Samsung SynMaster 170MP (flat panel LCD).

Problem is now it won't boot up, stuck on the Dell screen where it displays Optiplex GX110, BIOS revision A05, Phoenix technology.

The Optiplex is 733 MHz P3 with onboard video with Intel 810e chipset running Win 2000.

I've already installed the driver for the monitor. It is definitely a problem that's related to the 170MP because:

    1. When I switched back to the 753MB monitor it booted up.
    2. I also tried the 170MP on my other computer, a no name 2.6 GHz P4 running Win 2000 with Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 video card and it had no problem booting up. And that's without installing the driver.

I've check the 170MP manual and it did not list any minimum requirements for the computer.

    My guess is:
The onboard video is not up to snuff.
Maybe I have to specify which monitor to use with the Optiplex because the driver for the 753MB was installed before I installed the 170MP driver. Perhaps remove the old driver (if that is the case, how?)

    Any ideas?

I just swapped out a Philips CRT for a Westinghouse LCD on a Dell Optiplex running at 700MHz and had no problem. The computer also runs windows 2000 SP4 with rollup #1. I'm sure it is onboard video because the computer has not been upgraded since purchase as a refurb in Dec. 2003.
I did not install any drivers.

Can you boot into safe mode and remove the driver? If so, do it. Then shut down, just attach the new monitor and see what happens. If you get a display, then install the driver so you can tweak the settings.

this really intrigues me this one, swapping a monitor alone should not need any drivers switching etc, and if you are not getting past the biosscreen then its definitely not software related.

so good suggestion plodr, but if ive read his post right he will be unable to use safe mode.

@subgeeky are you trying to connect the monitor with a dvi connection or standard vga?

    Try this

go into the bios (F2 for setup on an optiplex )

Let it find the new monitor

    Escape exit, save changes

    Does it now work?

The bios on this model does not provide much information. It doesn't show monitor.

You can change the video from auto to onboard, and DAC snoop from off to on. That's about it.

The driver for the 170MP was installed. But if it doesn't get pass the BIOS screen, isn't that a moot point?

The 170MP only has VGA input, and neither computers have DVI port.

wow this really is a tricky one, just shooting in the dark what display is the new monitor showing when you boot it on other pc ie 1024x768

just wondering if theres a menu and its locked at too big a resolution for the onboard graphics to handle or maybe another setting, could try setting everything real low then hooking it back to the old machine

obviously this relies on your monitor having a menu built in lol

I was assuming he would do this to remove all the drivers for the new monitor.

Did you remove everything related to the new monitor?

I'm not sure how to uninstall the driver - not in "add/remove programs".

I did uninstall the graphics accelerator for this chipset. The resolution is 1024x768, 60Hz.

Still stuck on the BIOS screen with the Optiplex on the 170MP.

It does work with have another flat panel monitor - a Polaroid TV/DVD (FXM-1911C) that can double as a monitor, also VGA input. This one boots up, but I would prefer to use this as a TV in another room.

You open device manager and click on monitors. It should show you the SyncMaster that doesn't work. Click the driver tab and then uninstall the driver.

I have a feeling it's still not going to work, will try to work on it over weekend.

Might have to flash with A07 BIOS and see if that works or upgrade my computer!

My advice, don't flash the BIOS. You said another monitor also works.
You don't need to flash the BIOS to get a plug and play monitor to work. Flashing a BIOS can lead to you having an expensive doorstop; it isn't worth it, IMHO.

Uninstalled the driver and still didn't work.

Didn't flash the BIOS. But will try another computer with the same chipset (Intel 810e) and see if it works in the future.

Upgraded to 815e chipset and XP Pro and that computer worked with the 170MP.
