Hi, I have an issue of not being able to get past the blue Windows screen where you choose the user. I was on the computer for hours yesterday, cleaning off viruses and trojans etc. We went to safe mode to run some of the programs, and when we tried to switch back into normal mode we became "stuck" at that screen. Do you have any solutions besides totally reinstalling the windows operating system? Is there another way around that screen to get in and make changes? Will you please try to respond soon. I am supposed to work on this computer again today, since I am off work, otherwise it will be days before I can get back to it. We do have the restsore cd that came with the computer and the codes for it. But doesn't that restore it to the way it was when we purchased it, and if there was anything on the computer it will be erased for ever? Which we will do if it comes down to it....we don't have that much vital information on the computer.

Thank you for any help you can give. If you cannot help please let me know that too.

As far as what we did last: we were finishing up with an online scan done at: RavAntivirus.com that we performed in normal mode. Then rebooted into safe mode to run McAfee AVERT Stinger. When it was done, we tried to reboot into normal mode and that is where we are now.

(We followed the directions in the DO NOT POST UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THIS: How to: Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal Thread. So we ran: Ad-Aware SE, CCleaner, Spybot, SpywareBlaster SWShredder, Kill2me, about:Buster, and HSRemove, that were all downloaded. And then the online scan at Bitdefender.com/scan/license.php)

When we were "restarting" the computer from the safe mode into normal mode, (after the McAfee AVERT Stinger, the computer rebooted as it normally would and bought up the blue windows sign in screen;where you choose your user and type a password if necessary. We were able to choose the user we wanted, and then type in the password. The screen then said it was logging us in with our personal settings, it then ever so briefly, like 1/2 a second showed the desktop image with no icons on it, and then switched right back to that login screen and said it was logging us out and saving our personal settings.

We then proceeded to shut down and reboot right back to that screen again. We tried a variety of methods to get past that. We tried to push F8 while it was loading, and that gave us the options screen to login in normal or safe etc. we tried most of those choices and still had the same results. If we try to login under the administrator (which only shows up when booting in safe mode) the computer just freezes and goes nowhere, in that case we have to do a "hard" shut down with the button on the front of the machine.

    Please help

Sounds like you ran things in a different order then requested, but that should not cause problems like you are having. In fact nothing in the READ ME should cause this. All I can think of is some piece of malware that may have been removed during the procedure is at the root of this problem.

Physically disconnect your cable to the internet from your PC! And reboot in safe mode with no network support and try to log in. Any luck. I assume your OS is Windows XP. Do you know what service pack level you were on and do you have your Windows XP boot disk? Does it match the SP rev level?

Thanks for the response. We ended up using the restore CDs that came with the machine. That worked and got us back into the computer. We have another issue, but I won't post that here as it is a different issue all together.

If it is a malware issue, you can start a new thread here.

If you restored to your original system as shipped, you may need to due a bunch of work to et your system secured (especially if it was not shipped with WinXP SP2). Run the steps in the below:
