I need to vent here. I am so upset.
My husband is out hunting. We own 5 acres and our neighbor has 75. He just has a hunting cabin on his. Does not live around here, so we "watch" it for him.
He is not allowing anyone to hunt on his land except our family. He has it posted all over.
This morning, my husband is out hunting, and sees 4 people come onto the land the back way. They are walking around, even onto our land. Next thing you know, my husband hears shots and hears a bullet go right over his head.
I want him to call the cops. They are still out there and have no right to be. My husband just went back out there to tell them to leave, it is private property. I am sitting here, waiting for more shots. I am scared, mad, etc. I don't even dare go outside. These idiots are shooting constantly.

    Gal

Fogot to add, I hate guns. MY husband and children are very respectful of them, so we do have them here, for derr hunting, but I HATE them.

I'd take action yourself and call the police if your husband won't.
Trespassing is a serious thing, especially in the area of our country and I'm sure it is in the US and is an offense with serious penalties.
Don't leave it to get sorted, do it now.

 SCARY!! I think I'd want to call the police too. I bet he just doesn't want to start any big problems if these folks innocently wandered onto the property thinking they were still on someone else's. Hope everything works out ok.

With them making all that racket, I guess the hunting isn't going to be very good today...

I can relate, having had two incidents while pheasant hunting in the past, where bird-shot was falling CLOSE by. Those two fools were hunting without permission on private land, and as it turns out, city-dwellers new to the out-doors. There`s a reason for hunter safety training, and respect for others` property. You hear too often about hunters or even innocent bystanders being injured or killed by careless hunters. It almost makes the inner-city war zones more appealing because there you expect to hear gunfire close by. Caution by hunters is drilled into thier heads at the safety training but I think some are concerned with thier own safety and to hell with anyone else. Firearms safety is THE single ost important thing about the outdoors, followed closely by respect for others property, I believe they go hand in hand. I hope that the authorities there apprehend and punish those damned fools before someone gets hurt.

    CALL THE POLICE!

I know I would if I had people firing rifles in my yard, and you shouldn't feel any different just because you are outside of the city limits. It is illegal to trespass under any circumstances, and it is very dangerous to be in the woods hunting and to be surprised by people that you aren't expecting to be there -- and it is especially dangerous, because if those hunters don't know the property, they probably don't know where the surrounding houses are located.

My parents own 45+ acres of wooded property in Georgia and a window was shot out of the farmhouse two years ago by a stray bullet. It couldn't have come from anywhere other than someone shooting from their property.

We just heard more shots, so my daughter and I are going to take the truck and drive back there and see what's going on. I'm taking my phone.

    CALL THE POLICE.

People shooting up the woods are a danger to anyone in the vicinity. They more than likely know the are not supposed to be there, and the situation could become very dangerous for anyone confronting them.

    once again CALL THE POLICE.

We met my husband as we were going out there.
He talked to them, and they weren't happy, but have left.............for now.
Hubby expects to see them sneak back in. He did tell them if he saw them again he would call the police.
It is 4 young kids...late teens. As they left, they shot at something, but wasn't in my husband's direction this time.

I tend to agree with everyone else...call the police NOW and give them a description of the offenders and vehcle, license plate etc. As much as I may be speculating I`ll wager they`ll be back, and sooner than later. If the authorities have been apprised of the situation perhaps if those punks DO return they`ll respond a little more quickly. Good luck...and above all, be safe.

It`s people like that that made me retire from hunting. They give all the safe and respectful outdoorspeople (see me be PC too? heh heh heh) a bad name.

We didn't see a vehicle. They came in the backway through the neighbors woods.
It is pretty hard to get a description as all hunters are dressed in orange and most have beards to help with the cold weather. (At least that's my husbands excuse)
I'll be watching and if I see ANYONE except my husband out there, I will be calling.

    Thanks everyone for the advice.

Glad everyone is safe, Gal. But I think that giving people with that little respect for your property one chance is one too many.

I hope they don't return, but report them immediately if they do.

    Cheers, Publius

Thanks Publius. I am glad, too.
There is a lot of shooting going on today. Much more than last weekend.
Good thing no one can see me. I hear shots, so I run to go see if I can see my husband. Anyone would think I am nuts. He'll be coming in to eat soon, so I can calm down........At least until he goes back out.

Hunting lasts until Tuesday for our area.. Going to be a long 4 days.

Our vacation in Bushnell fell over hunting season one year, and I was so scared of stray bullets. Thankfully, our trailer is mostly in a little valley, but it's completely open in the front all the way across the lake, and I always get nervous when I hear shots coming from over there. If one were to miss it's target and make it's way across the lake.... yikes. We're always in our front yard, either by the swingset or on the deck. Not to mention that trailers are practically the thickness of a pop can!

Sorry you've been infested with stupid people gal. Hunting can be fun, relaxing, with short periods of exciting, but when the morons come out in force, it can turn sport to terror.

It's a pain in the butt, but if you & hubby both have cell phones, have him carry his, and CALL you if he shoots, so you know it's him. If he calls, you won't worry. If he doesn't call, and it sounds like it's on your property, you can call the cops immediately. Plus, confrontations with bad characters with guns can too easily get ugly. If he goes to confront any, have him call you and stay on the phone with you while he's with them. That will not only make them think twice about doing anything bad, as they have an audience beyond their control, it will give you some peace about it, and if anything DOES go bad, you can call the cops immediately. Have him describe them to you before he closes and talks to them. A bit paranoid sounding, I know, but cheap security.

We both have cell phones, but is illegal to carry them or walkie- talkies or anything like that while you are hunting. Gives you an unfair advantage over the deer.
Is a very good idea, though.

i don't understand hunting. we have wild boar. the easiest way of 'getting' them would be to trap them. or wait up in a tree and shoot them or snare them whatever. but no......men have to chase them over the mountain side with dogs until they can corner them.

    it's madness i tell you. :)

'the thrill of the chase' doesn't just extend to land animals. there is a delicacy called Opi'i here. it is a muscle like limpet that lives on surf pounded rocks. with all the abundance of food and the ease of its collection, why would anyone risk life and limb for a limpet? they don't even taste that great, (like bits of eraser if you ask me.) but people regularly die trying to pick these things off the rocks. go figure.

how bloody stupid is that. are you seriously saying that having a bloody great gun isnt advantage enough?? ROFL. and what if you get lost of in trouble? that with all our technology if you are a hunter your on your own?

    Well, poop. :D

That eliminates helping while hubby is hunting. But if he goes out specifically to chase off the trespassers, have him leave his rifle at home and bring the cellphone. Strapping on a pistol wouldn't be a bad idea for that either. That's not deer hunting, but it is self-protection.

Relief that noone was injured would be a bit of an understatement. Sad that it only takes a few to make what should be an enjoyable and productive pasttime such a risk.
