Stupidest eBay Auction EVER!

My brother is eBay'ing his 15-year old Seattle SuperSonics Shaving Bag - his fiancee thinks he is nuts to sell it and nobody will buy it.

Probably true - even with the 1 cent minumum bid, no reserve, and free shipping.

However, I'd love to get that hit counter up there showing a lot of ("cough, cough") interest in this fine collectible item (more "cough, cough") ... so if you have a minute, check it out, add to your eBay watch list, spread the word, etc.

P.S. Jim/Tim: Wasn't sure if this should be posted in the Lounge, so please move thread there if more appropriate.

Some hilarious updates after 12,000+ views and current high bid of $81.

On Sep-14-06 at 19:29:28 PDT, seller added the following information:
ok, now we're getting somewhere. I egged her on tonight by saying that I wanted to use this bag again for my travel through work. She started talking trash about it and how noone would ever buy it. So I got her to say that she'd give me a b*** **b for each dollar that I was able to sell it for. Help a brother out!

In subsequent updates, he talks about donating the money to charity, but "Of course, I'm going to keep the collatoral winnings due to me from my fiancee."

Supersonic Shaving Bag eBay auction is on the front page of digg.com right now ... and they are talking about Majorgeeks!

"but you know the top bidders will never pay up so it's dumb"
"Top bidder right now is co-owner of MajorGeeks.com. Not like it's some average 12 year old using their dad's eBay account."

eBay hit counter at 58,143 and climbing fast ...

Well, not so stupid now! That was fun to watch. The Q&A really brought em out, some interesting, some NOT, your Lady is a good sport.
Might want to watch out for Paparazzi!

Was unbelieveable from my perspective - 91,683 views - HOLY MOLEY!!!!

My brother did get a number of just plain nasty/naught questions that he didn't bother posting ... but yea, he was getting pounded today with inquiries and there were some funny ones (and responses) in there.

Ironically, my brother is at dinner right now with his fiancee (he lives 1,500 miles away) ... so I just left him a vmail that MajorGeeks (thanks again for bidding for charity Jim/Tim) got outbid at the last minute by some FunkyMonkey - sure hope they pay up - should know soon enough in a day or two.

This is great stuff, I thought I had found the strangest ever today, I have seen a $1 bill with 4- seven's in the serial number being auctioned as a poker winner, the current bid on a $1 bill with 4 7's 0.01!

I was afraid of that, seems to be happening more and more on ebay with the "Hot" items. Some people get a kick out of being the highest bidder, even though they never pay, just their moniker on a page. Hope that isn't the case here Hulkster, you brother did a great job, and handled the comments well.

Yea, the bidder doesn't have a lotta history, and is located in England which means that it was about 2:00AM when he placed his bid - could be some dude some home from the bars and decided to make a bid - real bummer since proceeds were doing to charity - oh well.

I'll pass on your kinds words to my brother BCGRay

Fingers crossed here, seems like there are ways of finding out who he is and shaming him to no end. Ebay has to have his info. Excuse me, the Scorpio in me emerging.

Bladesofhalo: Believe it or not, I've actually never sold anything on eBay ... so I don't know what all the rules are. However, I'm sure there is no obligation on the part of the other biddders (who were nice enough to bid in the first place - thanks all 64 of 'em) to pay if the top bidder squelchs.

darline1029: My brother still has not heard a peep from the guy who won 48 hours later. It's not like he doesn't know he won a very high visibility eBay auction. But being vindictive and going "after the guy" probably won't accomplish much. Plus the auction provided some good comedy ... but yea, it would be nice to get the money for charity.

Stuff like this happens - I had a Denver radio station - Alice 105.9 - indicate a ton of interest about donating to charity - their final answer was "we couldn't track anyone down ... that has the authority to sign the checks!" which I thought was an incredibly lame excuse - just say "we decided not to do it." BTW, they actually said this on the air - listen to the audio at the URL above.

Finally, I'm just about ready to fire up my halloween decorations and christmas lights webcams which have generated a buncha donations (and increased awareness) of Celiac Disease ... so the Karma is still good.

I believe the option goes to the next highest bidder ( who ever that might be) ;) but they (the winner) still has to have a valid reason for backing out. My daughter had a problem with a seller who after being paid did nothing. Her name and email was available after so even I contacted her. My daughter filed a dispute and was eventually paid. Seems like someone with geek powers could locate them. Just a thought.:)
Ps thank goodness for spell check or no one would ever know what I was saying.

Thats too bad! Try this - Ebay has to have their personal information, perhaps they can contact them and get somewhere. It helped my daughter once. Hers was little different, paid and did not receive the item, got her money back finally though.

Hey Hulkster sorry to hear the latest news its character's like that that have people saying trust nothing on the Net. the Good side is your brothers charity got some much needed exposure, bad side no money YET. Why don't you get your brother to run a blog like the dude in the UK did publically shaming the character that scammed him on E-Bay. One it would give more exposure to his charity, two it just might get the charity the money, three it would let these E-Bay scammers know that they can't get away with it. Like most slimey creatures they hate the light. The guys handle in the UK was "Laptopguy" googling will give you the info, there is also a thread here on MG that gives an old link. You might also PM M.A. and see if Major Geeks will give the amount they bid. All the best and I am sorry for both your brother and the Celiac Charity

    EDIT Perhaps a bad idea

How sure are you thats the same guy ? He has been silly enough to list a mobile phone number somewhere but I think posting it here would be unfair in case it is a different guy. The admins/mods can make that decision. its been soft deleted (I think)

If that is in fact him, he's young and far away but no excuse to start out your life being a cheat and a liar. No one should get away with being one. Theres blogs and message boards on just 2 I found, ebay and the music site sitting here doing my breathing treatment, and I don't even know what I'm doing. Think of the info gathered from a true Geek, kudos by the way Matt. lol

How so, he is not a member or posted here afaik, so we cannot ban or delete his posts.

Think this is between the auctioner ( Hulksters Bro ) of the item for sale and the buyers conscience ( samthefunkmonkey ).

I agree ... am NOT advocating any "action" or whatever against the buyer.

My bro' is in Africa right now (although he has online access), but I'm going to try to talk him into re-listing the bag when he gets back.

Doesn't it usually go to the next highest bidder when someone backs out? Or is the offer just made?
You know you can change your mind, all you have to do is decline and give a reason but to totally ignore the whole situation is beyond rude.

    Hi Hulkster

I dont use eBay but is their anything ebay can do with that member as they did have the final bid and in auction houses you actually goto, the final bidder pays, no matter what as its a contract you've entered into.

I have hardly any experience on eBay myself, but as noted earlier, I think all you can do is ask the buyer (multiple times in this case) to pay up ... and when they keep ignoring 'ya, then leave negative feedback on their eBay profile.

I've been watching in (My Ebay) an easy link to watch certain items. I saw the feedback. Pity your only allowed one and limited amount of characters. Although the wording covered it quit nicely.
