I went to the local Arby's for lunch Friday. I got a Market Fresh sandwich for $4.99 plus tax (should cost $5.49 with taxes). Cashier tells me that will be 4.99. So I ask, is that with tax? Yes she says. So I hand her a $5, she enters 5$ into the register, and lo and behold, .49 shows up on the screen. She then gives me .49 in change. Jeez... Do they teach any math these days? :D

Trainees... why do they put them on the register? Wouldn't the fry machine or something be better? Well, I explained to her I owed Arby's .49 cents, she got the manager and the manager looked at the reciept and said I owed $5 more... I reckon pressing the subtotall button might have eliminated the confusion, but who knows. After a brief conversation, all was sorted out, but dang, you have to wonder about the quality of the food if that is how smart the employees are.

It's another example of technology taking over if it says so on the screen then it has to be true.

i don't know about the US but here kids are allowed to use calculators in school so it eliminates the use of doing maths in your head and leads to the situation you describe.

I've actually had to help people give me change . . . yikes! This is not a difficult concept, people.

I understand better how short-change crooks successfully ply their trade.

Agreed in full! If I haven't taught fifty how to count change back, I haven't taught one. What kills me are the blank stares when, after the third try, they still aren't up to speed........ Hmmmmm, maybe all the dope in the 70's and 80's didn't actually make me moronic after all...... but I guess that's only relative to the high quality graduates of today (no offense meant to those who actually studied!)

I went into a shop once for some essential supplies (beer, milk, food etc). I had very little money so I was careful what I bought. I worked out I had just enough money for what I took the the checkout (only had about £4 on me). The cashier rang it all through, I handed the cash over, and was given more than £5 in change.
