    Hi,

Not sure what's going on here. Yesterday I was happily clicking away, trying to update my website. Suddenly the internet cuts out and when I re-attach my net adapter (Belkin Wireless G Plus Mimo) it either is not recognised at all, or the computer thinks it is 'new hardware'. I then thought I needed to update the drivers. So I download the new driver with my laptop, and when I try and memory stick it over to my PC, the memory stick is not recognised either. Then I realised I have no sound. So... woah. That's a lot of stuff all of a sudden.

I know its best to attach information about my system but I really can't since I can't transfer any documents from one computer to the other seeing how there's no internet and none of the USB ports work. This is what I know:

I'm running XP professional Service Pack 3 and:
    Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz
    2.21 GHz, 2.00 GB RAM

I don't know how useful that is. You can advise me on where to get more info for you. Either way, I seriously need some help. I can't get any work done like this.

    Thanks,
    Georgia

    Hi Georgia,
this seems to be more of a malware issue or hardware failure :( I would strongly advise that you go through the READ and RUN ME here...

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

Please try to do all of the scans, as you do not have internet connection on the problem PC or the use of the USB ports, download and save the progams on cd/dvd from your laptop then run them on the effected PC.

Do you get the same issue whilst in SAFEMODE (f8 at boot), can you get into safemode?? if so try to do a system restore to when the issue was not there.

can you not connect via your ethernet port??

Really? Because I actually ran Malware bytes before all of this happened and everything was fine. I hadn't gotten around to running spybot or ad-aware yet (because they aren't installed yet - I recently uninstalled old versions).

I managed to boot in safe mode and have restored to a few days ago before any of this happened (and before I did the malware scan actually. I find that tampering with the registry just caused my computer to freeze on startup).

But I will work may way through that list tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

    Ok.
I take it that after the restore everything is working as normal?? I wonder if when you uninstalled the older versions of spybot and ad-aware screwed your registry up !! do you have Ccleaner installed?? if so I would run a registry scan and let it fix all of the issues it finds, BUT, make sure that, when prompted, you save the changes to be made first, then at least if anything goes wrong you can simply restore the back up file.
Still run through the malware removal process as I still believe this to be malware/infection that has created the issue.

Yes I do have CCleaner and I've learned from using its registry cleaner that it's not a good idea because messing with my registry (as I said) causes my machine to lock up. So I shan't be doing that again. The same happened when I used malwarebytes to remove something from my registry. Basically, I just don't want to touch it anymore.

But yes, I look through that list and give it all a go. Thanks

Ok so... I booted up today and it crashed again so I really don't understand what is going on. I wanted to finally install everest so I could give you guys some actual system info but alas I cannot for I can only run in safe mode. I'm getting extremely fed up of all of this and just need to get things going again so I can actually get on with my work.

I've been over this again and again on these forums but have not had a clear answer. My startup list is pretty messed up. I'm looking at CCleaner now in the list of startup items. I have certain things disabled (I am running selective startup), but want to be able to just boot in normal startup because I doubt this is good for the machine. Here is the list with enabled and disabled things separated:

    ENABLED:
    cftmon.exe
    AudioDrvEmulator
    CTHelper
    CTxfiHlp
    UpdReg
    NvMediaCenter
    NvCplDaemon
    updtr.exe
    AppleSyncNotifier
    F5D9050
    DivXUpdate
    QuickTime Task
    UserFaultCheck
    SunJavaUpdateSched
    APSDaemon
    ItunesHelper
    Dropbox.lnk

    DISABLED:
    msmsgs
    MsnMsgr
    TeaTimer
    steam
    Acrotray
    Schedhlp
    TimounterMonitor
    CTDvDDET
    CTHELPER
    CTXFIHLP
    hpcmpmgr
    HPWuSchd
    hpztsb09
    NvCpl
    NvMcTray
    QTTask
    DLLML
    jusched
    TrueImageMonitor
    Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk
    VideoCam Suite 2.0.lnk

As you can see, there are duplicated items. Do I remove the duplicated disabled items and then boot in normal startup, or is that quite a risk?

PLEASE advise me on this. I've brought up this problem before but haven't had any solid answers yet. I DESPERATELY need to get back to work, so help would be much appreciated.

Also, I have actually looked at BlackViper's website and gone through his 'safe' list for windows XP professional services but it resulted in me having to do a system restore so I don't want to try that again.

    Thanks,
    Georgia

You need to get this thread moved to the software/hardware forum where it will get more attention as it is not a driver issue we are dealing with. Also have you started the "READ and RUN ME" that I suggested you to do?? PLEASE do so and create a new thread in the Malware forum for a Malware Guru to check the logs that the scans produce and they will guide you in the removal of any infection(s) that may or may not be present on the affected machine, you can do all of the scans in safemode if need be.
You have far too many programs initializing in your start up, I would personally disable ALL except for security ones like Anti-virus/Firewalls, I have only 3 start up items all security related... Comodo ISS 5, IObit Malware Fighter Pro and Secunia psi .. any other programs, I start manually when I need them!!This is on all of my machines and I have never encountered any issue with start up.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I've been away for the past few days so haven't had a chance to do the scans and so on but certainly will. I'm currently in safe mode so I'm going to give all this a go and let you know what happens.

How do I get this thread moved? Or should I re-post the important points in software/hardware forum?
