"You might want to try the last know good configuration of windows xp. To do that you should press the F8 key as your system is starting up. Then choose
the option for the last know good configuration. If that does not work then boot into windows. Go to start, then
run and then type msconfig. Go over to the startup tab.Uncheck everything listed. Then click apply or okay. Close the window. Your computer will ask you to restart.
Click restart. Your system will restart. It will say your are using selective startup. Click don't show me this again and then click okay. Still if that does not work. Then you may want to run the repair
tool for windows xp. To do this you should
boot to the windows xp cd. It will say press enter to install windows now. Then press R to repair. Press R. This process will take several minutes.
Let it finish. Take out the windows xp cd and then restart the system. Windows will startup. If it works you shouldn't get the message. Unfortunately,if that step doesn't work then you need to format
and reinstall windows from the xp cd."
    Try that.
This is a major common problem.

it seems the problem is with the modem .. and it is always a good idea to get the latest drivers first ... either the devise manager(start>control panel>administrative tools>device manager) ... I do not have a modem and it has been a long long time since I've used one, so I cannot tell you where to find it in there(DM) .. but when you do right click on it and hit 'properties' it should tell you the make and model of your modem .. and then just goto the manufacturers site and download the latest driver .. you can also tick 'driver' in the pop up and tick 'update driver' and then follow the wizard .. although I usually do not like doing that unless it is a last resort

also a tool like everest can tell you what modem you have: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181

    Hi,

Interesting, I had a Compaq a few years back that did the exact same thing and it had a lucent modem in it. It did'nt do it often but enough to be annoying.

Never new what the problem was till now, after awhile the modem went and I put another in and now that I think of it, it never did that again.
