Something happened to my Sound. When I left-click the speaker icon in the lower right of my screen, nothing happens and I cannot adjust the system sound volume. Where should I look to fix the problem.

Settings > System > Sound - check everything is selected and on. There may also be a F key that turns sound on and off, F1 on my Thinkpad, you may have pressed it accidentally.

When you right click do you get a menu?
If so, click the top item Open Volume Mixer.
Look at the bottom to be sure mute is not on. You can use the slider to increase or decrease the volume.
Sometimes my speaker shows as muted but I do have sound.

    I did not get a menu when I right-clicked.

So this morning I performed a shutdown and startup and now I can adjust the volume AND I get a menu when I right-click.

I also see three "sound waves" coming from the little speaker icon that I'm sure were not there when I had the problem yesterday.

    UPDATE:
Today my problem with sound returned. If I hover over the speaker icon on the lower right of the screen I can see my current sound volume (0-100%). If I left-click the icon the shading around it increases but nothing else happens. I cannot vary the sound level.

If I right-click the icon absolutely nothing happens.

When I listen to something on Utube I can vary the sound but only by changing the Utube speaker icon.

If I listen to a track using the JRiver Media Center I can vary the volume using the app's volume icon.

If I go to my Settings I don't see anything that indicates the sound control is static.

If I restart the computer then I can vary the sound level using the icon at the lower right of the screen.

I haven't done anything unusual or anything that I haven't done over the last 20 years that might affect the sound level.

If anybody has any ideas about what is causing this I would appreciate their comments.

Have you had a good look at the settings in Advanced Sound Options? Also, what is the Master Volume currently set at? Have you tried resetting to the Microsoft Recommended Defaults?

    Hi Earthling,

I went to Settings>Systems>Sound. Everything (Output>Master Volume, Advanced Sound Options>App Volume and Device Preferences>Master Volume, etc.) is set to 100%. I haven't mucked around with the sound characteristics ever. I went ahead and clicked the button for Reset to Microsoft Recommended Defaults anyway and received a "Your system has been set to defaults" message. I've done this a couple of times since the problem appeared but it doesn't help.

Something in one of my apps must be changing the sound settings but I can't find it. I only use JRiver Media Center and VLC Media Player to listen to MP3 files and to play MP4 files. After I reboot I can go for several days before I can no longer change the sound volume when I left-click the speaker icon at the bottom right of my screen.

This is probably a long shot, but it seems that the problem started appearing several days after I updated FF from version 88 to version 89.

Make sure that neither JRiver or VLC is set to check for updates and update in the background. Perhaps as one or the other updates, it changes things.
Make sure that neither program is running at startup too.

I have just disabled the JRiver Media Center "Check for updates". Thanks for that tip.

I cannot see how to disable the "Check for updates" that appears when I click the Help menu in VLC.

Neither program is running at startup.

If you are still having sound issues we need to know what sound system you have.If you are running Realtek sound you will have to keep reverting back to an older version until it works.

Windows 10 updates are buggin out audio updates.
