I want to get a new digital camera for my wife for V-day. She dropped our ancient Photosmart 618 at Christmas time...and now it no worky. (Hmmmm...maybe that was intentional? "Whoops! Oh well, I guess we need a new camera" ;) )

Anyway, my price range is only about $175 - $225 I know I can't get much for that, but I was hoping to get at least 3.1 Mpixels, as well as Optical zoom. Those are my two "must haves".

I'd like to stay away from HP, since our 618 ALWAYS had red-eye. Even with the red-eye reduction on. Also, HP's software seems a bit bloated.

Anyway, any suggestions for a decent camera in that price range? Preferrably something available at a "brick and mortar" (someone always seems to get upset if I use a stores name) rather than on-line.

    Any suggestions/experiences are appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Steve

I got my wife a Canon Powershot A75 for Christmas and she has been very happy with it. It has 3.2 Mp, optical zoom... etc. And it runs on just 4AA's and has pretty good battery life. Also, is in your price range ( I think I paid about 190.00 for it online.)

have to second the Canon A75, very nice camera.... I was fortunate that my old job involved testing and playing with various cameras as I had to judge print quality from the digital laser mini-labs we were using and cameras from Canon, Olympus, Fuji, Kodak, Nikon all faired well... didnt like.. well actually loathed the HP cameras as they used there own JPEG compression which fubared up the machines on a regular basis.

apart from the Canon A75 these are also good around that price

    Olympus Stylus 300 ( 3.2mp @ $190 newegg )
    Sony DSC-P73 ( 4.1mp @ $220 newegg )
