Help !!! When I visit some websites I get an yellow triangle in the bottom left corner of my browser bar. When I double click it it says there is a syntax error in a specific line ....some functions on the websites will not work, for example if the site has a picture of something that you can click to enlarge it will not enlarge. I am told this is a Java problem. I just downloaded the new Java 6 beta and no change. Any ideas?

    Hi Moumantai,

Did you get a Google Toolbar or not? I'm guessing not if you downloaded Java from the MG links as in the TX one you supplied?

as to your question of normal, possibly as that maybe a version without Googles Toolbar incorporated.

@Nick, I just installed Java from the EU MG link and Googles add-ons were not installed, like Moumantai I also installed using typical.

Think you really do need to read the full thread and not just 1st page or snippets of posts as MOUMANTAI states Java RE is at update 8 now and works with the likes of Limewire.

J2SE Rubtime Environment 5.0 Update 9. I finally was able to download. Don't ask me what this is though I don't have a clue, maybe something to do with web development. I removed the previous version in Control Panel. Yes it is at majorgeeks too, search their site under Java.

Yes, it is. Always run the latest version of the Java VM available, otherwise your system will be vulnerable to infection. WinFixer takes advantage of system running out-dated versions of Java.

Make sure you uninstall all older version of Java.

Java software allows you to run applications called "applets" that are written in the Java programming language. These applets allow you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D. Corporations also use applets for intranet applications and e-business solutions.

Hello. In my add & remove programs, I have the following: Java J2SE Runtime Env. 5.0 update 11...also I have Java J2SE Runtime Env. 6 update 1. And the third one is Java 6 update 2. These are spelled exactly as they are in add & remove. Is J2SE RE 6 Update 1 a different program than Java 6 update 2, other than a more recent version ? Or is it ? It's confusing. Could you please tell what I need to keep and what I need to delete and possibly what am I running ? Thank you kindly.

    HI Gregory

Uninstall all the old ones and just keep the new version, Java updates are not rolling updates to update a previous version, these are all seperate applications... yes rather confusing really.

Java 6 update 1 is not a different program than J2SE RE 6 ??? Thanks

it seems there are many of us confused. My major confusion comes from using both Opera and Fire Fox. Which version of java works with which.
I have the following java listed
Java 2 runtime environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    java 6 update 2
    java se runtime environment 6
java se runtime environment 6 update 1
One of these days I will understand this in the mean time I need a lot of help.

That sounds like a JavaScript problem, not Java. It often happens to me, because I program in JavaScript. Sometimes this can be caused by the browser running out of memory. Otherwise, there is nothing you can do about it, except to try a different browser, or update the one you use. Many pages are made for just Internet Explorer. Others include Mozilla FireFox also. Very few are made for others such as Opera. The author of the page probably doesn't even know you are getting the error, because it works on the browsers he/she tested.

I have a Windows 98 computer, and the latest release of Java doesn't work well on it. (messes up screen, a couple crashes while working hard, etc.) Is there any alternative to the latest version to fix this problem without those problems?

Java Doesn't Work With Windows 98 First Edition

Unfortunately, the latest version of Sun Java requires Microsoft Windows 98 SE or higher to run.

It would usually be recommended that you upgrade to the latest version of Sun Java, but because of your current operating system would have to recommend that you use Sun Java version J2SE v 1.4.2_08.

You may already be running this version of Java, so the upgrade will not be necessary.

To get this version of Java you need to do the following:

    1) Go to the Sun Microsystems Java site at, java.sun.com

    2) Click on the "Downloads" link on the left side of the page. You will now be presented with a page that contains a lot of drop down boxes.

    3) Click on the small downwards arrow in the top drop down box (the one that contains the text "Full J2SE Technology Downloads List").

    4) You need to select "All platforms" underneath "J2SE 1.4.2", then click the "Go" link.

    5) Under the heading "J2SE v 1.4.2_08 JRE includes the JVM technology", click the link "Download J2SE JRE".

You will now be able to follow the on-screen instructions to complete the download.

Thanks. I thought I had Win98SE, but I guess it could still be the first edition. I think I installed the JRE I tried with JDK 1.6.

    :wave Hello There!

I've checked out my gf's computer and there's no Java listed under Add/Remove Programs. The results of a [Search] are attached, showing an empty Windows Folder - a 606KB JavaScript Folder in C: Programs\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader - and a couple others. * Her hard-drive was re-formatted and Windows re-installed in August.

What action would you recommend ?

I was wondering if it is okay to install java runtime environment on your computer or is it like giving an invitation to all those malware, virus etc. problems.??? Any input or suggestion would be appreciated.

Lots of confusion about Java, the fact is if you keep it updated, it is as safe as anything else. Microsofts old program that competed with Java had a lot of issues, but its dead now.

Get JavaRA, it removes and adds new version. It is awesome.

One site recommended that I install the Microsoft VM instead of Sun's version to fix a problem because of sound issues, but the page with the problem had nothing to do with Java: it was pure HTML tags, CSS, scripts, but no Java, and no sound. A button doesn't click because there isn't any onclick attribute or similar, so it's just an image. This is a huge, fairly well-known gaming site, (I'm sure over half a million members,) so I was surprised about all of this.
