Sun/Java = ... "God"?

In my most recent update of Java v.6 (#23), they now seem to have completely eliminated my ability to control updates (on, uh, MY machine) - other than uninstalling the software - though something tells me that I would have an extremely difficult time ridding my machine (thoroughly/completely/100%) of all of it - entirely (??).

Is this the case now (for all), and isn't this, uh, a bit "controlling", please?

    Thanks in advance...

    Hi Glenn,

You have control whether to update Java or not although it is good practice to update to the newest version. I've attached a pic of where you can find java to update it manually or automatically (in XP) Then after the installation you probably would want to disable it's automatic update in "Startup CPL". http://majorgeeks.com/Startup_CPL_d619.html If necessary, you can also update the java plugin in FF.

Here's a short explanation of what Java does and you'll see why you probably don't want to eradicate Java from your machine. http://java.com/en/download/whatis_java.jsp

Thanks oma, but several things here...

    1. I'll have to limp-on-over to the XP machine here to double check, but yesterday when I was looking at it, the "Update" tab was not there on my version/machine -- I triple checked it then (did a triple-take!). I'll check that again here in a few minutes...

    2. I do have it, and I do update it...I just don't want it constantly searching for updates (running)...I don't necessarily want it checking once a month on schedule either...I'd like the control on it.

    3. I'm having trouble with Startup CPL . I went to it immediately when I noticed the missing update yab (in Java), and Startup CPL was not allowing me to delete or change anything without duplicating whatever it was...AND THAT REALLY TICKED ME OFF TOO!!!

    4. The plugin in FF updated itself well-enough (perfectly, actually).

I think that's it...I will check again for that Update tab on the XP machine right now........and thanks again...
PS ~ great...meant to mention - as I was reading your reply here, I got a pop-up (I was a bit shocked actually) - from "www2,fullsoft-basetr.in" (or either ww2,fullsoft-basetr.in - ??) wanting me to run a scan blah blah blah...I tried cntrl+F4 to make it go-away (rather than clicking-on anything), but that didn't do the trick, so I pressed "Esc", and it launched the DAMN "THING"...DAMNIT!!! And now after an update and FULL scan, MBAM has found nothing. I have the worst luck with these machines....

As I mentioned you can turn the update off by unticking the boxes in Java (programs)but you also need to untick (=disable) the box in front of the java update in Startup CPL. You can also delete it by rightclicking it and choosing delete.

Be aware though that many of these updates are security related and leaving an old version may expose your computer. Some websites may not display properly etc. or whatever if you eradicate Java so it's up to you whether to have it installed or not.
As said above, just untick the box and leave it at that. Delete any duplicate of it by rightclicking it. I don't know why you would get a duplication of that Java update in CPL?

What the other stuff in red is concerned, I have no clue Glenn.

Oma, again, no update tab - screenshot attached
And when I right-click>Delete in Startup CPL - nothing happens.

If I uncheck (un-TICK) it, it duplicates...?

    FALSE ALARM!

    MY APOLOGIES PLEASE!?!

Though I was logging-in/selecting the "Administrator" account (from the Welcome screen), this PC has been having SERIOUS issues - specifically with UAC - since reinstalling the OS (or rather, installing a "parallel" OS).

The screenshots below are as would be for a limited (restricted) user, again, even though I was attempting to view it all (and make changes) from the admin.

Sorry - all is well (now) with Sun/Java and Startup CPL - please disregard (hope to be getting this UAC situation under control S00N!
