MS Security Essentials is telling me that their support of the Vista OS is ending. Does anyone have any recommendations for a free antivirus package for Vista? I have used Avira and AVG before with fairly good success, but want to be open to better ideas. Any suggestions?

There are plenty on MG. For the least use of system resources my preferred choice (if you only want Anti-Virus and not a suite with Firewall) then this:
    Comodo AntiVirus

I ordinarily use AVG and MalwareBytes in tandem. I got a really great deal on AVG Ultimate, so I have the full versions of both software.

If you're not doing anything, ahem, "naughty" then the free versions should suit very nicely with periodic scans.

    Recommend this:

    Comodo Firewall
    Avast Free/360 Total Security/BitDefender Free
Browser extensions: Your choice of script blocker/HTTPS everywhere

Avast and 360 are close, but 360 has a sandbox you can use for the browser. 360 is very sharp detection-wise and has very good system defense mechanisms. Avast is clever in itself with outstanding recognition of malware. BitDefender is the sharpest recognition.

If you want something special for Anti-ransom. Take a look at AppCheck Anti-Ransom. Recommend reading up a little bit on MalwareTips or Wilders to see what you aren't getting with the free version. Only one kind of r/w it doesn't block, because the free version doesn't protect the MBR (Master Boot Record), which is wrecked by the one type of ransomware.

Everyone is going to have a different opinion on an AV. Read the specs of each one and see which one fits your needs. they are free so give them a try but always only have one AV installed on your computer at a time. I've used Bitdefender Free for a while now and never had any slowdowns, viruses or malware. But in the end the choice is up to you.

ESET, not free, is always rated near the top. I got a free license as a present from a friend. Unfortunately it slowed my computer to a crawl so I had to remove it. So what works on my computer, might not work well on yours. That's why you test the free ones to see what works in your situation.

By the way, I have ESET installed on my two android tablets and it works great on those. Go figure. (There is a free and paid version for android; I have paid on one and free on the other.)
