Superior diagnostic checker for Hard and Sof

I have a feeling that the system I just got has more than one issue.
Is there a super outstanding software (preferrably freeware) which can check all of the following for me:
1] Hardware -- drives, RAM, modem, everything basically.
2] Software -- check OS and any other software issues?

 

There are individual programs that will test hardware: one for RAM, one for the hard drive (generally from the manufacturer), one for the video card, one for the modem, etc... There are all-in-one testers also, but they aren't free, and don't do as good a job as the individual programs do (IMO). As for software: you, the user, are the best diagnostic for Windows and your programs. Are they running correctly? Is the PC running fast and stable? Are there errors popping up? Are there 'hidden' errors in the Event Viewer? Running current drivers can make a difference also if you install a new program (like a game) and suddenly things go whacko. You can check your drivers 'manually' or use a driver 'manager' that will check if newer drivers are available. Personally, I have never used one of these, and I check for new drivers manually, and not that often (maybe once a month for the video and chipset). There's some good video card 'testing' apps in the Video and in the Graphics downloads, take a look in the Benchmark section too. A great way to test your RAM, CPU, and video card all at once is to throw 3dMark06 at 'em, and see what happens

 

IMO its best start with the RAM test, and Memtest86+ is the best tool for that.

For CPU you can use CPU Stress Tester Thingy.

For HDD, you should examine SMART reports for the drive(s).
