Suspect spam email

What is it called when you receive an email from a friend but the subject seems vague enough to have not been sent by them personally and instead its someone using their email address to richocet a bad email to yours?

The body of the text strikes me as strange, there is a record of this sort of stuff, right?

"Hey-

I found this cool site... They're giving away ipod nanos.

(A link to www.mygiftresource.com is then displayed).

Give me a hand and we'll both get one.

Thanks! I really appreciate it.

Now, that does interest me. Like I said, it doesn't feel like the guy I know to be sending an email like that.

I do not want to post the link in case it's a bad link, or am I allowed to in this controlled environment?

It's called spam!

It could also be that your friends PC is infected and sending out email to people in his address book.

It could also be that you are or were infected and the names of people in your address book are being used to send you fake email. It could be IP spoofing. Stuff like this can even send you email that looks like you sent it.

By opening it, have I compromised my PC or those who are on my address book?

I managed to speak to my friend yesterday and he confirmed it was spam. He says he clicked on the link and everything.

Not necessarily! If you only clicked on the message to read it and did not click on any links or attachments, you may be okay. This is true in most cases especially if you have your system protected properly, your antivirus will normally catch problem emails.
