Hello. I am curious to figure out what is causing suspicious behavior on my desktop. The main thing I notice often is if I leave my computer unattended for a while (several hours), and I leave my hotmail email account open (with the browser displaying the list of emails in my Inbox), then when I come back I notice that the browser now displays an open, random email. I've gone through the recommended steps and attached the corresponding logs.

First, clean up what Hitman found. Then run this:

http://imageshack.us/a/img841/7292/thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Then clean out your Hotmail account.

I am not finding any malware in your logs. So it must be something in your Hotmail account.

Ok, I ran HitmanPro and deleted what it found. Then I ran JRT as suggested.
    I've attached both logs.

Good. That removed the junk. But probably didn't help with your email issue. Have you cleaned out your Hotmail account?

I clean my email 2 or 3 times a week. I go through my Inbox and delete unwanted emails and/or mark them as "Junk". Then I go through my Junk folder and make sure any false positives in this folder are marked as "Not Junk" and I "Block from" all the rest. Then I go to my Deleted folder and "Empty" it. I'm not sure what else I can do to clean it? I only keep email in my Inbox that I need/want. While going through this malware cleanup process, I haven't left a browser window open with me logged into my account to see whether the problem is resolved or not. I will do it as of now and will report if I see any further problems. If I do, I guess I will change its password in case it has been hacked.

Ok, last night I left the computer unattended for about 7 hours and I left a browser window tab opened to the Inbox for my Hotmail account. When I got back home I noticed that it was again on an open email that was sent to two days prior (on 02/11) regarding an alert about one of my credit card's payment being due in 15 days. I have changed my account's password for now and will continue to monitor it to see if it happens tonight.

In the meantime, what are the next steps to take to finish the malware cleanup procedure?

It is always advised to use a different computer to change your passwords.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link

Well, I wasn't having any typical easily identifiable problems with malware, so I would've assumed things were fine now (other than the hotmail anomalies). However, I ran an ESET Online Scan and it found many threats (12), but they were all on attached external usb hard drives. The only reason I ran it is because it was recommended to me for another computer in another thread. I figured it wouldn't hurt anything if I did. Anyhow, since I didn't want to change anything until I heard from you, I unchecked the "Remove found threats" option. I wasn't sure if you'd simply have me run an ESET scan again, but this time leaving that option checked so it can get rid of them, or whether you'd have me use something else to get rid of them. I have attached the ESET scan log.

UPDATE: This time when I came back to my computer after leaving it unattended for about 6 hours, I saw that the browser tab with this forum open was on the profile of some random user. I had left it on the main page of the Malware Removal forum. I don't know what could be causing this, but it's the first time I notice it on a webpage other than my hotmail account.

Re-run Eset and have it fix what it found. Then after a reboot, run it again.

Ok, I ran ESET Online Scanner and fixed the items it found. Then I rebooted and ran the scan again. However, this time I selected "Scan for potentially unwanted applications" and "Scan for potentially unsafe applications" and it found a lot more threats. Since I selected "Remove found threats", it deleted all of them. I've attached the log. I haven't closed ESET Online Scanner yet, in case I need to restore some of the items it quarantined (e.g. MGTools). I'm not sure that all items it found as threats and deleted/quarantined really should've been.
