    Hi,

    I'm running Windows 7.

I have to be careful how much bandwidth I'm using as I get charged by the gig.
Problem is, everytime I go online, an svchost service starts obnoxiously using up bandwidth and downloading/uploading without my permission.

I run the computer as Administrator, yet when attempting to stop the service
within Task Manager, access is denied and I cannot stop the service. I suspect the culprit is BITS, PID 184, but I am not yet certain as I haven't been able to shut it down and find out.

    Can anybody assist?

Then what you need is something that can tell you which apps are using your bandwidth and to what extent. Take a look at NetLimiter and forget all about svchost. You could completely cripple your computer tinkering with that when you don't know what you are doing.

Will NetLimiter enable me to stop services from using up bandwidth?

I mean, if I can't even stop the service in task manager, is NetLimiter going to be able to?

    thx

Don't get hooked up on services. The default set is suitable for most users, and stopping them can have unpredictable results. NetLimiter will tell you what is using your bandwidth. It's then up to you to decide what to do about it, though help is available here of course.

Ok, well I already know what is using the bandwidth.

I need to be able to stop it..

Suit yourself, but if you succeed in stopping svchost I assure you you will also stop your computer dead in its tracks.

Well thanks but that isn't very helpful.
I don't need to stop svchost entirely, only one of its services, probably BITS.
It's not like I have a choice anyway. I either stop it from unauthorized transfers or I can't use the internet.

Well you just right click it and click Stop. That's it.

If you are using an Administrator account that is not normal. Have you run any updated AV scans?

I did run a Norton scan earlier today.
Is there another scanner you would recommend?

MBAM is widely used here. Update it before scanning, ideally in safe mode.

    darn, MBam found zilch.

    Any suggestions?
