svchost.exe

After having a memory error related to svchost.exe (I can't recall the exact wording) I clicked cancel. I then checked the task manager to see one of the svchost.exe processes using 20-100 MB of RAM, and at one point it used 50%of my dual core CPU (meaning that it was at 100% usage on one thread). Later, my computer switched to the old '98 windows style for the menus and such, but it quickly went away.

I try to keep my RAM usage down to improve performance in games, and I have never seen any svchost.exe using a significant % of it. The User name is System and I have 7 copies of svchost.exe running, one of which is using 56MB RAM as I type this.

-I have scaned with Norton AV, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender.
-I went over hijack this, and it looked clean, but I'm not very confident in my ability to read through a log file.
Any help would be appreciated

• Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

• CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
• AVG Antispyware Log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
• Bitdefender - from step 6
• Panda Scan - from step 6
• runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
• newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
